HIGH POINT, N.C. – Winthrop forced overtime with a six-goal fourth quarter comeback but fell in double overtime to High Point by a final score of 13-12 on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, Winthrop moves to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in Big South play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Scarlet Cifarelli got the Eagles on the board first at the 10:50 mark of the first quarter.
- High Point tied it up nearly four minutes later.
- Ellie Dutton and Claire Witmer made it a 3-1 edge for Winthrop with 4:11 left in the first quarter before the Panthers knotted it up at three two minutes later.
- Dutton notched her second goal of the contest with seconds left in the quarter, giving Winthrop a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes of action.
- The Panthers held the Eagles scoreless in the second quarter while tacking on five goals themselves, resulting in them going up 8-4 at the break.
- Grayson McKenzie ended High Point's 5-0 run with her first goal of the game and the first goal for either team to start the second half, cutting the lead to 8-5 at the 13:26 mark.
- High Point then scored three straight goals to take a six-goal lead with less than six minutes left in the third quarter.
- McKenzie got her second with 2:43 left in the frame, making it a five goal deficit.
- But the Panthers responded a minute later to go back up six at 12-6, which would be the score after the end of three.
- Lexi Johnson got on the stat sheet with her first goal of the afternoon and then Cifarelli scored her second goal of the game to make it a four goal affair with 11:28 remaining.
- Witmer then scored two quick goals, netting a hat trick and cutting the score to 12-10 with 8:50 left.
- Gabby Pierpont then notched her first goal of the game, cutting it to one with 4:53 left.
- Witmer tied the game at 12 on the free position shot with 1:38 left, completing a six-goal fourth quarter comeback to force overtime, holding the Panthers scoreless in the quarter.
- Neither team scored in the first overtime, forcing another three minutes.
- The Panthers won it in the second overtime with 1:40 left.
