Reese Basinger and
Sydney Boulware turned in strong pitching performances to lead Winthrop to a doubleheader sweep of Radford, taking both games 2-1 Saturday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Radford struck in the top of the first as Laura Thompson singled to center with one out
- Robert stole second with two outs and then scored on a Cori McMillan flare just over the head of Lily Stump at shortstop
- In the bottom of the sixth, Paige Rivas walked with one out and then on the very next pitch KaDedra Temple smashed a home run to center for a 2-1 lead
- Reese Basinger recorded a career-high 16 strikeouts in the game as she allowed the one run on five hits and issued just one walk
Game 2
- Sydney Boulware retired the first 11 batters before allowing a 2-out single through the hole on the right side by McMillan
- McMillan stole second to get into scoring position but Boulware ended the threat by getting a foul out
- In the bottom of the fourth, Ansley Lee took an 0-1 pitch over the fence in center to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead
- Radford answered right back in the top of the fifth as pinch-hitter Abby Wilson hit a leadoff home run to left field
- In the bottom of the fifth with a runner on and one out, Ashton Vanhouse reached on a fielder's choice and then moved to second on single by Paige Rivas
- The next batter was Temple and she hit a grounder that was misplayed by the second baseman as Vanhouse raced around from second to score and give Winthrop a 2-1 lead
- Radford did threaten in the top of the seventh as McMillan singled to center to lead off
- McMillan was sacrificed to second but Boulware got a fly out to left and struck out the final batter to end the game
EXTRA BASES
- Basinger's 16 strikeouts are the most in a single appearance in the Big South this season, passing teammate Sydney Boulware's mark of 15 set on Feb. 24
- Basinger also set a new career-high for strikeouts in a single-season with 146 and has 114 more strikeouts than walks on the season
- Temple stretched her streak of reaching base to eight straight
- The doubleheader sweep means the Eagles take the series against the Highlanders for the first time since 2016
- Winthrop had lost five straight one-run games to Radford prior to today's 2-1 victories
- Radford and Winthrop are accustomed to one run games as 15 of the last 32 meetings head-to-head have been decided by one run and 21-of-33 decided by two runs or less
