Eagles Complete Sweep Of Radford With Walk-off Win

Rock Hill, S.C.Macy McCall provided a walk-off RBI single to lift Winthrop to a 2-1 victory over Radford, Sunday afternoon in Big South Conference softball action.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The start to the game was delayed an hour and 15 minutes due to rain
  • Radford threatened in the top of the first as Cori McMillan doubled down the third base line with one out but Reese Basinger recorded a strikeout and ground out to end the threat
  • Winthrop also put a runner in scoring position in the first inning as KaDedra Temple singled with one out and then moved to second on a ground out but the inning ended on a ground out to short by Ansley Lee
  • For the second straight inning Radford got a one out hit as Abby Wilson singled and then moved to second on a wild pitch
  • Basinger struck out the next two batters to keep the Highlanders off the scoreboard
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Macy McCall led off with a single up the middle, but was out at second on a fielder's choice
  • Two batters later Chelsea Roberson singled and pinch-runner Aleah Roy moved to second but the inning ended on grounder that led to a force out at second
  • Wilson led off the 5th inning with a home run to center to put Radford in front 1-0
  • In the bottom of the 5th, Ashton Vanhouse reached on a single to short but the late throw to first was off the mark and she moved to second on the error
  • Paige Rivas followed with a single to short on a slow roller to put runners at first and second
  • Two batters later McCall ripped a single past the diving second baseman and into center field as Vanhouse raced around from second to score and tie the game at 1-1
  • Radford led off the top of the seventh with a triple off the right field wall by Rachel Smith
  • Basinger proceeded to strikeout the next batter, get a foul out to third and then struck out Cassi Barbato for the third out
  • Olivia Martin reached on error when the pitcher misplayed a slow grounder
  • Vanhouse and Paige Rivas each followed with bunt singles to load the bases
  • Temple hit into a double play with a chopper back to the pitcher who came home for the first out and then the throw to first was in time for the second
  • McCall stepped up and ripped a shot up the middle that went off the tip of the glove as the second baseman made a diving attempt to keep the ball in the infield
  • Vanhouse scored from third to win the game 2-1

EXTRA BASES
  • Basinger struck out 13 in the game and finished with 29 strikeouts in her two starts against Radford on the weekend
  • Winthrop swept the series from Radford for the first time since the Big South moved to three-game series
  • It's the first time the Eagles have won three straight against the Highlanders since 2015-16
  • Temple pushed her season-best streak of reaching base to nine games
  • The win was the fifth straight for the Eagles, who have allowed just three runs in that stretch

Winthrop is off during the week and will be back in action on Saturday, Apr. 1 for a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb scheduled for 3 p.m.
