Eagles Rally To Win In Extra Innings After Trailing By Four In The Seventh

ROCK HILL, S.C. –Winthrop came back from a four-run deficit in the seventh inning to defeat Gardner-Webb in extra innings at home by a final score of 9-8 in the first game of the three-game series with the Runnin' Bulldogs. The Eagles move to 10-13 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On their first at-bat of the day, Winthrop took a 2-0 lead when Jonathan Strauss singled to score McKinley Erves and Ricky Teel.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs tied the game with a two-run home run in the top of the second and took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on their second homer of the game.
  • GW seized a 6-2 lead in the next inning on a three-run home run and a solo dinger on the next play.
  • Winthrop cut it to 7-3 when Charlie Evans grounded out to drive in Will Martin in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Then on the Eagles' next chance to bat, Joseph Szvetitz made it safely back home when GW dropped a pop up that would have ended the inning, cutting it to a three-run deficit.
  • GW went up 8-4 in the top of the seventh on an RBI single.
  • Winthrop began to rally in the bottom of the eighth when Ramses Cordova doubled to bring home Ty Hooks and Strauss, trimming the lead to two.
  • The Eagles tied the game at eight in the ninth inning on Strauss's RBI single, forcing extra innings.
  • Szvetitz won it for the Eagles in the bottom of the tenth on a sac fly.
