ROCK HILL, S.C. - Coming off a split of a two-game, mid-week series in which they lost at Wofford 18-10 and then notched a 4-3 comeback victory over The Citadel at home to move to 5-4 on the season, Winthrop faces the Maine Black Bears for a three-game series at The Winthrop Ballpark tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
 
The two schools will meet for the seventh time with the Eagles leading the series by a 6-0 count, with all six coming in Rock Hill. The most recent meeting was on Feb. 16, 2020, a 13-4 victory at home.
 
Maine's visit to Rock Hill will be part of a season in which they will play their first twenty games on the road or at a neutral site. Their most recent game was a 6-3 loss to Northern Illinois in the Penn State Tournament in Cary, N.C. on Feb. 26. Maine opened its year with a three-game series vs. ACC foe Pittsburgh in Sarasota, Fla and proceeded to take two of the games vs. the Panthers. At the Penn State Tournament, the Black Bears dropped all three contests and will enter Friday's contest looking for their third win on the season, as they are 2-4 overall.
 
Last season, Maine posted a 27-22 overall record and a conference-best 21-9 in the America East Conference. The Black Bears earned the title of regular season champions before being eliminated in two games in the conference tournament on their home field. Maine was picked fourth in their preseason poll this year.
 
Winthrop enters 2023 predicted to finish ninth in the Big South Conference. The Eagles finished the 2022 season with an 18-34 (11-13 Big South) record. The Eagles also welcome back 18 players, nine of them starters and 16 newcomers, all either freshman or transfers.
