HARROGATE, TN– Winthrop moved to 3-3 on the season with a thrilling, 10-9 triple overtime victory over Butler on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University on Sunday morning on a goal by
Scarlet Cifarelli.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulldogs scored 30 seconds into the game and took a 2-0 lead nearly five minutes later.
- Grayson McKenzie notched the first Winthrop tally at the 5:35 mark.
- Butler answered with a goal on the next play.
- McKenzie scored her second goal of the game at the 1:35 mark to leave the Eagles down 3-2 entering the second period.
- Butler started the second frame with a goal in a similar way the first period started.
- McKenzie responded by getting a hat trick on the man-up at the 13:43 mark and Claire Witmer then tied it up a minute later.
- Butler took a 5-4 lead at the 8:53 mark only for Gabby Pierpont to knot it up again a minute later.
- The Bulldogs scored two goals to break the tie and go up 7-5 with four minutes left.
- Witmer scored her second goal of the game with 1:48 remaining on a free position attempt, cutting the lead to 7-6. This score would hold for the rest of the half.
- Neither team scored for six minutes to open the second half until Molly Dankowski tied the game at seven on the man-up at the 9:22 mark.
- Witmer got a hat trick on the next play 20 seconds later and gave Winthrop their first lead of the day at 8-7.
- Both teams then went into another six minute scoring drought until Butler scored to even the score at eight on a free position attempt at the 3:27 mark.
- Dankowski got her second goal with exactly two minutes remaining in the third quarter to give Winthrop a 9-8 lead, which the Eagles would take going into the final 15 minutes of action.
- Neither team scored for nearly the entire fourth quarter until Butler put one in the back of the net on the man-up to knot the contest up at nine with 1:22 left to force overtime.
- Neither team scored in the first two overtimes.
- Winthrop finally broke through 45 seconds into the third overtime when Scarlet Cifarelli scored on the man-up to win the game for the Eagles.
