Huntington, W.Va. – Winthrop softball wrapped up play at the Thundering Herd March Madness with a 7-4 win over Cleveland State and 2-0 win over Rider, on Saturday.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Cleveland St.
- Paige Rivas drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first and then stole second
- After back-to-back outs, Mackenzie Smith and Kaitlyn Tucker drew walks to load the bases
- Isabella Clark stepped up and put the ball in play but lined a shot right at the third baseman for the third out
- In the bottom of the second, Chloe Baker reached on an error to start things off
- Baker moved to second on a passed ball and then to third on a wild pitch
- After Chelsea Roberson walked and stole second, Aleah Roy came up and delivered a single to score Baker for a 1-0 lead
- Roy then stole second to put runners at second and third as Paige Rivas came up and singled to left to score Roberson to lead 2-0
- Paige Rivas stole second but the throw from the catch was off the mark and allowed Roy to score from third
- Cleveland State came right back in the top of the third to push two runs across and make it a one run game
- Kaelin Ettinger led off with a single to left and then Kiera Frascone hit into a fielder's choice and Ettinger was safe due to an error on the play
- After a strikeout for the first out, Brooke Albaugh singled to load the bases
- Alexa Sieger singled to left for the first run and then a run came across on a fielder's choice that led to a force out at third
- Eagles tried to add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Isabella Coark singled to right to leadoff and then pinch-runner Ashley Wood stole second
- Baker was hit by a pitch to put two on with no outs
- Eventually the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs but Macy McCall popped up to short to end the threat
- Cleveland State tied the game in the top of the seventh as Ettinger walked to lead off and was sacrificed to second
- After a single to center field by Jenna Deang put runners at the corners, Albaugh grounded out to second and pinch-runner Emily Yacapraro scored
- In the bottom of the seventh Ansley Lee was hit by a pitch with one out and replaced at first by pinch-runner Peyton Rivas
- Roy singled to the pitcher followed by a walk from Paige Rivas to load the bases
- This time McCall stepped in with the bases full and hit a walk-off grand slam to center
vs. Rider
- Eagles struck first in the bottom of the second as Tucker was hit by a pitch with one out
- Tucker moved to second on a ground out and then scored on a Clark single to center
- Sydney Boulware was in control the first four inning including striking out the side in the fourth
- Boulware ran into a little trouble in the top of the fifth as Kristyn Gardner singled with one out followed by a double from Brianna Koonce
- Jessie Niegocki hit a grounder to third and a throw home got the lead runner at the plate to keep Rider off the board
- The third out came when Niegocki was called for interference when Gianna Epps put a ball in play
- Olivia Martin led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and Aleah Roy followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Martin into scoring position
- Martin moved to third on a ground out by Peyton Rivas and then scored on a single to center by Roberson for a 2-0 lead
- In the top of the seventh Kristyn Gardner reached with one out after getting hit and then moved to second on a ground out
- Niegocki singled to third base to put runners at the corners but Sydney Boulware got the final batter looking to end the game
EXTRA BASES
- Boulware tossed her second shutout of the season as she scattered seven hits and issued no walks while striking out eight (it was her fourth start of the year with eight or more strikeouts)
- Against Cleveland State, the Eagles stranded 12 runners
- The 12 runners left on base is the second most by the Eagles this year as they stranded 13 against Fordham
- The two games in which the Eagles stranded the most this year, they won both games in a walk-off
- KaDedra Temple had a hit in all four games on the weekend and has a team-best four-game hit streak
ON DECK
Winthrop returns home for an 11-game home stand that begins on Wednesday, Mar. 15 with a doubleheader against Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.
