Eagles Drop Series To Liberty

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop dropped the three-game series with Liberty by a final score of 9-7 Sunday afternoon at home. Winthrop moves to 4-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles got on the board first in the first inning when Brody Hopkins hit a sac fly to right field, bringing home Dylan Ducharme and putting Winthrop up 1-0.
  • In the next inning Winthrop took a 2-0 lead when Ramses Cordova hit single to right field to bring home Ty Hooks.
  • Liberty tied it up on a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning.
  • The Flames then took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single and getting a runner home on a double play.
  • Down by two, Winthrop cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth when Cordova hit a single to score Hooks once again.
  • Liberty took it back to a two-run lead in the top of the seventh with their second homer of the game.
  • Again down by two, Winthrop cut it to 5-4 when Mark Kirkland grounded out but was able to get Ricky Teel home. This came against ex-Eagle pitcher Garrett Gainey.
  • On the next play, Hooks got to second on an error and Joseph Svetitz got tagged for the third out at home but McKinley Erves was able to reach home before Svetitz was put out. This sequence tied the game at five.
  • The Flames took the lead for good on a three-run home run in the eighth inning.
  • Liberty scored one last time on a wild pitch.
  • Winthrop concluded the scoring when Svetitz grounded out but Teel scored and then Kirkland made it to second on an error but allowed Erves to score.

Winthrop travels to Wofford on Tuesday in their second road trip of the season for a 6 p.m. match-up with the Terriers.
