Eagles Fall At Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After trailing 9-0 after the third inning, Winthrop cut it to one in the fourth but eventually fell to Wofford on the road by a final score of 18-10. Winthrop moves to 4-4 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wofford cleared the bases with a triple in the bottom of the second inning to lead 3-0.
  • On the next play the Terriers got the runner home on a fielder's choice, making it 4-0.
  • The home team capped off the inning with a single to score two more.
  • In the next Wofford half, the Terriers struck home with three runs. The first two came via an error and the third run scored while a Wofford player was caught stealing to end the inning.
  • Winthrop got on the board in the top of the fourth when Brody Hopkins got home on a wild pitch and then made it a 9-4 deficit when Jonathan Strauss doubled to score Ty Hooks and Nate Chronis and Wofford walked in McKinley Erves with the bases loaded.
  • The Eagles drew even closer when Hopkins, the man who started the rally, hit a grand slam to cut it to one run. This was Winthrop's first homer of the year.
  • Wofford would get two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single.
  • The Eagles walked in a run in the bottom of the sixth to extend Wofford's lead to 12-8.
  • In the bottom of the seventh the Terriers put the game away with four runs.
  • Winthrop cut it to six in the top of the eighth when Strauss again doubled to score Hooks and Harrison Wilson.
  • The Terriers wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the eighth when two runs came in to score on a single.
