How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop started the game up 4-0 on baskets by Paige Powell and Jada Ryce off a CSU turnover on a fast break before CSU hit a three-pointer on the next play. The Eagles would go on a 9-2 run to take a 13-5 lead with 3:14 left while also holding the Bucs to one field goal for nearly six minutes. Aaishah Barry capped off the run with two free throws. The visitors would get a basket but Ryce concluded the quarter with a jumper with eight seconds left to take a 15-7 lead heading into the second period.

Second Quarter | The visitors scored the first 12 points of the frame while holding the Eagles scoreless for six minutes. Leonor Paisana ended the drought with a three-pointer with 3:45 left to cut the lead to 19-18. CSU answered with a triple on the next play but Paisana hit her second straight deep bomb to cut to a single point once again. The visitors hit yet another three seconds later to go back up four. CSU would then score six of the last 10 points to take a 28-22 lead into the locker room.

Third Quarter | The visitors started the second half with a basket but Winthrop got five quick points to make it a one-possession game at the 8:05 mark. This included Paisana's third three of the game up to that point. The Bucs would score the next four points to take a 34-27 lead and held Winthrop scoreless for nearly four minutes. Powell and Price would sink a combined three free throws coming out of a media timeout to make it a four-point game but the Bucs would go back up eight on a layup on the next couple of plays. The Eagles would then go on a 6-0 run to cut it 38-36 with nearly a minute left on two straight Powell layups and a layup by Tori Hall. After CSU answered with a three, Powell scored and was fouled on a layup with nine seconds left but missed the free throw, leaving Winthrop down 41-38 at the end of the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter | The two teams traded the first four baskets, leaving CSU up five with seven minutes left. Price would get a jumper to cut it to three with nearly five minutes but the Bucs answered with an and-one to go up five at 49-44 at the final media timeout of the game. Coming out of the stoppage of play, Price got two free throws to cut it to three once again but the visitors began to pull away with two consecutive layups on the fastbreak. Powell would hit a layup to make it a five-point game at 53-48 with 2:20 left and Winthrop called for time. The visitors largely maintained that five-to-seven point margin for the majority of the rest of the way as the Eagles fell 64-57.
