How it Happened

First Quarter | Jada Ryce started the game with a jumper to put Winthrop up 2-0 before GW tied it on the next play. Winthrop would score 13 of the next 22 points to take a four-point lead with 2:28 left. During the spurt, two of the Eagles scores were from three-point range, one each by Leonor Paisana and Shamyjha Price and Paige Powell led with five points. The visitors would then surge ahead by four on an 8-0 before Powell scored just before the quarter ended, leaving Winthrop down 19-17 at the conclusion of 10 minutes of play.

Second Quarter | GW picked up right where they left off to start the second quarter, scoring the first 11 points of the second half before Price got Winthrop on the board with a layup at the 6:12 mark, making the score 30-19 in favor of GW. The Runnin' Bulldogs would largely maintain their 11 point edge until Paisana hit a triple with 3:11 left, making it an eight-point deficit. This was part of an 8-4 run to close the half for the Eagles, holding GW to two free throws and a basket as Winthrop would enter the locker room down 37-30.

Third Quarter | The two teams alternated the first four baskets to start the second half, excluding two free throws by GW, leaving Winthrop trailing 41-36 at the 6:16 mark. The Runnin' Bulldogs would nail one from deep and scored on a jumper on the next play to go up 10 before Price scored down low to make it an eight-point game with 4:25 left. After a free throw by GW, Powell answered with a free throw and a layup to cut it to six with nearly two minutes to go. The visitors would then make a three-point shot, a layup and a free throw to go up 12, at 53-41 at the end of the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter | Powell started the fourth quarter with a free throw but the visitors hit two consecutive layups and a free throw to go up 16 two minutes in. Winthrop would get a free throw by Barry and a basket by Price to make it 58-45 with less than seven minutes left but GW would answer with a score down in the paint to go back up 15. Winthrop fought back by going on an 8-2 run, with six of the points coming via three straight Powell layups. This cut the score to 62-53 with 3:31 left, forcing the visitors to call a timeout. Coming out of the stoppage of play, GW hit a three and a free throw to go up double digits. Ryce would then score to make it an 11-point deficit with 1:31 left.
