Winthrop To Open Season At Home Vs. Kennesaw State Tomorrow Afternoon

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop women's lacrosse program will open their 2023 season at home against Kennesaw State on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The contest is set to begin at 2 p.m.

WINTHROP AT A GLANCE
Winthrop is coming off a 4-14 (3-6 Big South) record in 2022. The Eagles welcome 16 newcomers to the squad and assistant coaches Hannah Potter and Hailey Sanders. The Eagles also return 18 players, including four captains, senior Alyssa Angelo, graduate student Molly Dankowski, senior Jenna Diebert, and junior Grayson McKenzie.
 
Angelo and Dankowski return as Winthrop's top-three offensive pieces, as Angelo is the Eagles' leading returning goal scorer with 47 goals during her junior year, and Dankowski led the 2022 squad in shots with 58 attempts in 18 games played.
 
McKenzie played in 16 games last season, registering 10 goals and two assists on 24 shots on goal while Diebert played in 18 games, tacking an assist and 13 groundballs.
 
The Eagles were ranked fifth in the Big South preseason poll and are in their second season under head coach Kara Concheck.
 
SCOUTING KENNESAW STATE
The Kennesaw State Owls are 1-0 so far this season as they defeated Reinhardt 22-4 at home in their opener. 2022 was the best season in school history for KSU as they finished with an 11-7 (3-2 ASUN) record, good for third in their conference. 18 players return for the Owls, including seven starters and welcome 11 new players, all either freshman or transfers. On the Owls coaching staff is Winthrop lacrosse alum Bianca Tedesco ('21). In the Reinhardt game, the Owls saw 11 different players notch a goal, including five nabbing hat tricks.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST KENNESAW STATE
The teams have played eight times with each side notching four victories. The first meeting occurred on Mar. 15, 2013 with the Eagles winning 22-8 in Rock Hill. After winning the first three meetings, the Eagles have since dropped four of the last five meetings. Kennesaw State won the last matchup 14-8 on Feb. 24, 2022 on their home field. Winthrop's last win in the series was a 9-8 thriller in Kennesaw on Mar. 30, 2021.

Winthrop will stay at home for its next contest as the Eagles host the Clemson University Tigers of the ACC on Saturday, Feb. 18.
