Elon, N.C. — Winthrop improved to 4-0 on the season after wins of 4-2 over Morgan State and 8-7 in nine innings over Elon on the final day of the Elon Softball Classic.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Morgan St.
- Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Chelsea Roberson connected on a 1-0 pitch with one out and took it over the fence in left center
- In the top of the third, Paige Rivas singled with one out and moved to second when KaDedra Temple reached on a fielding error
- Macy McCall followed with a single to center, scoring Rivas from second for a 2-0 lead
- The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Melissa Paz was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning
- Madison Nunez followed with a triple down the left field line, scoring Paz to cut the Winthrop lead in half at 2-1
- Later in the inning with two outs, Deb Hamilton scored on an errant throw by Roberson on an attempted steal as Morgan St. tied the game at 2-2
- Winthrop responded immediately in the top of the 5th
- Eagles loaded the bases with two outs after Ansley Lee drew a walk on a full count with runners at the corners
- Then Kaitlyn Tucker came through with a single to center, scoring Temple and Peyton Rivas to lead 4-2
at Elon
- Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and took a 1-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly from Tucker
- Elon tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-out RBI double from K. Wells
- Winthrop regained the lead 2-1 in the third inning as Paige Rivas led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Macy McCall single
- In the third inning Ella McGalliard made it 3-1 in favor of the Eagles with a sacrifice fly that scored Chelsea Roberson, who led off the inning with a double
- C. Davis led off the bottom of the seventh to cut the Winthrop lead to 3-2
- After a single from Hatzopoulos, a fielding error put runners at the corners
- Elon tied the game at 3-3 on a double-steal as Hatzopoulos scored
- RBI singles by Isabella Clark and McGalliard in the top of the eighth put the Eagles on top 5-3
- A two out, two-run double to left center by B. Devesa tied the game and forced another inning
- In the top of the ninth, the Winthrop offense came through with three runs which proved just enough after Elon pushed two more across in the bottom of the ninth
EXTRA BASES
- Winthrop is 4-0 to start a season for the first time since the 1994 season
- McCall had her second stolen base on the year and has tied the program record of 71 set by Charlene Curtis (1989-92)
- Tucker, Roberson, and McCall now have three-game hitting streaks
- Tucker and Temple have reached base in all four games
- Sydney Boulware tossed 3.2 innings of relief to earn the win vs. Morgan State as she improves to 2-0 on the year

Winthrop will be back in action Feb. 16-18 as it hosts the Winthrop Eagle Classic. The Eagles will have their home opener on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. against Queens.
