Queens Uses Late Rally To Defeat Winthrop

Rock Hill, S.C. – Queens used a late rally to topple Winthrop at home by a final score of 64-61 on Sunday afternoon.

Winthrop (4-5) | Queens (4-4)
Dec. 3, 2023 | Winthrop Coliseum
Winthrop 61, Queens 64

How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop started the day with a 13-7 lead four minutes in. Jada Ryce accounted for five of the initial 13 points for the Eagles. Queens cut the lead to two at the end of the quarter by outscoring Winthrop 13-9. At the end of 10 minutes of play, Winthrop led 22-20.

Second Quarter | Queens tied it with a pair of free throws but Leonor Paisana drilled three-pointers on consecutive possessions to put Winthrop up six at 28-22 at the 8:13 mark. The Royals tied it with an 8-2 run only to have Paisana put the Eagles back in the lead with another triple with five minutes left. The visitors hit four straight free throws to go back up by one and the two teams each got a basket following the free throws, leaving Queens up 36-35 with two minutes to go. Neither team scored after that and Winthrop trailed by one at the break.

Third Quarter | Marissa Gasaway scored the first seven Eagle points of the second half, putting the Eagles up 43-36 with less than eight minutes left. Queens came back with three three-pointers to go ahead by two while holding the Eagles scoreless for more than four minutes. Paisana ended the drought with a score from downtown to give Winthrop a 46-45 lead with 3:33 remaining in the quarter and then drained another deep bomb two possessions later to increase the lead to four. Still ahead 50-48 after a Queens three-pointer, Gasaway knocked down two free to give Winthrop a 52-48 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter | Winthrop quickly made the score 55-48 after a free throw by Gasaway and a jumper by Blessing Okoh but then failed to score for more than three minutes. The only other score for either team was by Queens nearly a minute after Okoh's jumper. Gasaway's layup with five minutes left made it 57-50 Winthrop but the Royals then cut it to two with five quick points. Ryce's layup at the 3:23 mark made the score 59-55 Eagles but Queens made it a one-point game by drilling a triple on the next play. After two free throws made by Angel Burgos after getting fouled on a three-point attempt to give Winthrop a 61-58 lead with 2:46 left, Queens scored more than a minute later and then went ahead with four seconds left on a layup. Winthrop traveled on their next chance to win the game and Queens salted it away with two free throws. Winthrop's final play drew nothing but air on a three-point try and the Royals escaped with the victory.
