How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop started the afternoon up 8-4 with
Jada Ryce and
Marissa Gasaway each notching four points. The Bruins scored four quick points to tie the game and the two teams alternated baskets on the next couple of plays, leaving the Eagles ahead 14-13 with 2:47 left after a Gasaway jumper. Then after the visitors knotted it up at 15 on a layup a minute later, the Eagles broke the tie by scoring the final six points of the frame.
Second Quarter | Carolina University began the second quarter with an immediate layup on the fast break. The Eagles hit four straight free throws to take an eight-point lead at 25-17 at the 8:31 mark. Each team then got four points after that, leaving Winthrop still up eight with nearly five minutes left. During this span, Winthrop held the Bruins without a field goal for nearly five minutes. The visitors answered with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to one at 31-30 with two minutes remaining but the Eagles finished the half strong with a big 10-0 run of their own. Ryce's jumper with four seconds left gave Winthrop a 41-30 lead going into the locker room.
Third Quarter | Both teams split the first 12 points of the second half, leaving the Eagles still up 11 at 47-36 with six minutes left in the frame. Eventually Winthrop would seize a 17-point lead at 55-38 on
Ronaltha Marc's fast break layup with 3:53 remaining, their largest up to that point. The Eagles would lead 61-45 after three quarters.
Fourth Quarter | Both teams combined to score only five points in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. The Eagles scored eight straight points to take a 23-point lead at 71-48 with nearly three minutes left and holding the Bruins to three points in the first six minutes of the frame. Winthrop concluded the contest by scoring six of the final 10 points to account for the final margin of victory.
