Rock Hill, S.C. – Kelton Talford's 21 points led four players in double-figures as Winthrop earned its first win of the season, 98-44 at the Winthrop Coliseum Wednesday night.

FIRST HALF
- Kelton Talford's two free throws opened up the scoring just 17 seconds into the game
- Brevard's Charlie Hester drilled a three from the wing to put the Tornadoes in front in the early going, 3-2
- After the team's traded buckets inside, Talford scored at the rim off a feed from K.J. Doucet to lead 6-5 and spark an 11-0 run
- Doucet scored inside on back-to-back possession before Sin'Cere McMahon knocked down a three to lead 13-5
- The run was capped off by Xavier McKelvy's layup to for the 15-5 lead with 14:50 remaining
- Brevard cut the lead down the six points before the Eagles came right back with baskets at the rim from Nick Johnson and Kasen Harrison
- Winthrop led 22-12 with 8:28 left after a put back from Talford
- That bucket started an 8-0 run that pushed the lead to 18 points with 5:09 to play
- Harrison had the final three points of the run as he scored inside and was fouled, hitting the free throw to complete the three-point play
- Eagles pushed the lead to as large as 28 with 11 seconds to play but Quincy Carter connected on a three as time ran out as Winthrop led 45-20 at the break
SECOND HALF
- Over the first four minutes and 16 seconds of the second half, the Eagles outscored the Tornadoes 11-7 to push their lead to 31 at 58-27
- Noah Van Bibber knocked down a straight away three for a 63-27 lead, the first triple of his collegiate career
- Yoro Diallo stole the ball and finished at the other end with 6:52 left in the game to put the Eagles up 50
- Diallo scored again with 3:33 left as he drove down the right side of the lane and finished off glass to lead 90-38
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Winthrop shot 70 percent in the second half and finished at 61 percent for the game
- Winthrop was 29-of-40 (73%) from inside the arc and 19-for-28 at the foul line
- The Eagles outscored the Tornadoes 58-4 in the paint and 38-11 in points off turnovers
- Rebounding battle favored the Eagles 41-21
NOTABLES
- Talford's 21 points marked the 11th time he's scored 20 or more points
- Sin'Cere McMahon led the Eagles with six assists, tying his career-high
- Yoro Diallo led the Eagles with a career-best seven rebounds
- Noah Van Bibber, Henry Harrison and Diallo all made their collegiate debuts
- Winthrop has now 60 straight games against Non-D1 opponents
- This was the six straight win in a home opener
UP NEXT
Winthrop remains at home as it will host Drexel on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. as part of "Homecoming" weekend. It is also a doubleheader with the volleyball team who faces Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m.
