Eagles Fall At Clemson In Season Opener

Clemson, S.C. – Winthrop men's basketball fell 78-56 at Clemson in its 2023-24 seasons opener, Monday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.
 
WINTHROP (0-1, 0-0 Big South) CLEMSON (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
  • P.J. Hall (20 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, block, steal)
  • Ian Shieffelin (16 points, 7 rebounds, block, steal)
  • R.J. Godfrey (12 points, 5 rebounds, assist, block, steal)

FIRST HALF
  • After a couple of misses by each team, P.J. Hall opened up the scoring with a three for the early lead
  • Hall hit a turnaround jumper from the baseline to make it 7-0 with 16:41 left on the clock
  • Xavier McKelvy got the Eagles on the board on a stick back off a Nick Johnson miss after he stole the ball and tried to finish on the other end
  • McKelvy pulled the Eagles within three points at 7-4 after he drove down the lane and scored at the rim
  • Tigers made it 10-4 with a straight away three from Ian Schieffelin with 14:18 left
  • A corner three by Alex Hemenway pushed the lead back to seven points with 12:31 on the clock as that jump started a 6-0 spurt that led to a 17-6 advantage
  • Eagles trailed 21-10 with 7:33 to play in the half and over the next four minutes chipped away to cut the deficit to four points after a Kasen Harrison layup
  • Clemson pushed its lead to nine points at the break behind threes from Joseph Girard III and Chase Hunter
SECOND HALF
  • Hall opened the second half scoring the first six points for Clemson as it pushed the lead to as much as 14 points in the early minutes
  • Two free throws from Harrison at the 12:55 mark cut the deficit to 11 points, but Hemenway responded with a three on the ensuing possession
  • At that point Clemson knocked down six of its next 10 shots to push its lead to 64-44 with 6:33 remaining

 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Winthrop finished the game shooting 35 percent from the floor while the Tigers connected on 44 percent
  • Clemson was 13-for-32 behind the arc (41%) and the Eagles finished 5-for-18 from three (28%)
  • Winthrop shot 83 percent from the foul line as it was 15-for-18 while Clemson was 11-of-12
  • The rebounding battle was won by Clemson with a 39-30 advantage
  • Eagles finished with 14 turnovers, just three in the second half while Clemson had 10 in the game
  • Points in the paint were a deadlock at 26-26

NOTABLES
  • Eagles fall to 29-18 all-time in season openers
  • Doucet's 12 points pushed him over 900 career points (908)
  • Alex Timmerman led the Eagles with seven rebounds as he moved within two boards of 400 in his career
