How it Happened

First Quarter | UNCW scored first to start the night but Ronaltha Marc made a layup on the next play to tie it at two at the 8:03 mark. The visitors scored 13 straight points to take a 15-2 lead with less than five minutes remaining while holding the Eagles scoreless for nearly five minutes. Winthrop then answered back with a 7-0 run to make it a six-point game at 15-9 with 1:34 remaining in the frame while holding the Seahawks scoreless for four minutes. Angel Burgos's three-pointer capped the run. UNCW ended the quarter with a layup to lead 17-9 after 10 minutes of play.

Second Quarter | Marc hit a free throw to open the scoring in the quarter for both teams at the 8:38 mark. UNCW made a layup a few plays later to go up nine but Marc hit a fast break layup of her own to cut the margin to seven once again with 4:38 remaining. After two more UNCW free throws a few seconds later, 10 straight points scored by the Eagles made it 21-20 in favor of the Seahawks going into the break. Marc capped off the run with a layup on the fast break with nearly a minute left.

Third Quarter | Marissa Gasaway immediately gave the Eagles their first lead of the game at 23-21 on a layup and a free throw to start the second half. UNCW tied it a few plays later but a Blessing Okoh layup at the 6:36 mark put Winthrop back on top. Then two scores by Marc and a layup by Prunelle Mungo extended the lead to seven at 31-24 with less than three minutes left in the quarter while also holding the Seahawks to just one field goal in the frame. At the end of the frame, Winthrop led 31-27.

Fourth Quarter | Nyah Stallings gave Winthrop a six-point lead on a fast break layup nearly a minute into the fourth quarter. The visitors hit four free throws to cut the lead to two at 33-31 with less than eight minutes left. Gasaway then took the lead up to four with two free throws of her own immediately thereafter. UNCW answered with a layup but Gasaway came up big again by scoring and drawing a foul. The ensuing free throw put the Eagles up five at 38-33 with nearly five minutes left. This was the Eagles first field goal in more than three minutes. The Seahawks hit a layup a few plays later but so did Gasaway, restoring Winthrop's five-point margin. Following the final media timeout of the game, Marc hit a free throw to go up six at 41-35 with less than five minutes remaining. The two teams split the next six baskets, leaving Winthrop still up six at 47-41 with 1:52 left. The Seahawks made it a two-point game with 12 seconds left by scoring five quick points but Jada Ryce hit two free throws to go up four. UNCW drained another triple with three seconds only to have Ryce put Winthrop up three with three seconds to go but UNCW was fouled shooting a three two seconds later. They made all three free throws, forcing overtime.

OT | Winthrop never recovered in the extra session. Gasaway started the extra session with a layup on Winthrop's first possession but the Seahawks went up one on an and-one on their first try, giving them the lead for good.
