Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop men's soccer suffered its first Big South Conference setback as it fell 3-1 to UNC Asheville, Saturday afternoon.

Game Recap
- Bulldogs earned a free kick at the top of the D at the 4:39 mark of the game and took advantage
- Aysa Hamid stepped up and struck the free kick into the left corner of the goal for the early lead
- In the 8th minute it was nearly 2-0 as Stewart Patnaud hit the crossbar on a shot after the ball cleared outside the 18 yard box
- Just shy of the 10th minute the Eagles looked to have tied the match as Nick Guido received a long pass from the back line, turned and dribbled right down the middle of the field and then played a pass behind the defense
- Ricardo Ferreira ran onto the pass and one-on-one with the keeper, he placed a shot into the right corner of the goal but was whistled for offside
- In the 17th minute Grayson Woodard collected a long cross near the edge of the box, played a square pass to Rodrigo Ferreira who cracked a shot on frame headed toward the left corner that hit an Asheville defender and out over the line for a corner
- In the 35th minute the Eagles had another good opportunity to tie the match as Guido lifted a pass over the top of the defense as Emory Crichlow ran on to the pass into the box
- Asheville keeper Charlie Farrar came out to close the angle as Crichlow got a shot off but hit Farrar in the chest as he collected the rebound
- With just under six minutes left in the half the Eagles earned a free kick wide of goal near the offensive third and Rodrigo Ferreira served a ball near post to Ricard Ferreira who directed a header toward goal that was stopped by a diving save from Farrar
- Less the a minute later the Eagles found themselves in an uphill batter as the Eagles were down to 10 men
- With less than 20 seconds to play in the half the Eagles had a free kick that was sent into the box and the clear went sideway as Diego Candia tried to slip a shot into the back of the goal from inside the six but it was smothered by Farrar
- Winthrop came out halftime with a strong push offensively as it had a great chance for the equalizer in the first minute of the second half
- A long ball by Sam Pidgeon found its way to Woodard wide on the right as he collected it, dribbled into the box and then served a ball in front
- The service found Guido in front who fired a header on frame that was tipped wide on a quick reaction save by Farrar
- In the 48th minute Ricardo Ferreira had the ball wide left, then dribbled back toward the middle of the field and let a shot fly from about 25 yards that was headed toward the top right corner that Farrar tipped over the bar
- In the 49th minute Ricardo Ferreira was set up inside the box with a free look on goal to the keeper's left as he fired a low shot that Farrar just got his hand on for the save
- In the 68th minute the Eagles thought they had tied the match again as Stefan Sildor rifled a low shot from 25 yards out straight on from goal as Farrar got down for the save and the rebound came out in front of him as Ethan Marks followed the shot and was there to score in the open goal
- After getting halfway back to midfield with the ball in hand, Marks and the Eagles heard the whistle and the call for offside
- In the 76th minute the Eagles finally broke through as Aiden Williams served a bouncing free kick in front of goal as Candia reached his foot out and flicked it over and past Farrar to tie the match
- Asheville responded minutes later and took advantage of a giveaway as Sam Pitts-Eckersall played a pass into the box to Patnaud who settled the pass, turned past an Eagle defender and played the ball into space as Conor Behan ran on and fired a shot that hit the crossbar, bounced down and just barely over the line for a 2-1 lead
- Asheville got an insurance goal in the 83rd minute as Patnaud received a pass wide, dribbled into the box and then across to the middle before firing a shot into the lower left corner
- In the 85th minute Guido found himself with space and dribbled into the box and from an angle fired a low shot on frame which Farrar turned away with a kick save
- Once last chance for the Eagles came in the 87th minute when Guido used some magical footwork to work his way toward goal near the end line as he tried to beat Farrar over his right shoulder but just pulled it wide

- Eagles finished with a 25-21 advantage in total shots and 11-10 edge in shots on goal
- Winthrop had seven corners to four for the Bulldogs
- The game saw 38 total fouls
- Jack Kilstrom tied his career-best with seven saves
- The Eagles are still in second place in the Big South standings and can secure the #2 seed for the Big South Tournament with a win at High Point on Wednesday
Looking Ahead
Eagles are back home on Saturday, Oct. 28 when they host UNC Asheville at 2 p.m. It is "Senior Day" as this year's senior class will be recognized in a pregame ceremony.
