Eagles Remain Unbeaten In Big South With 1-1 Draw At Longwood

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop men's soccer remained unbeaten in Big South Conference play as it earned a 1-1 draw at Longwood, Wednesday evening

Game Recap
  • Longwood had the first dangerous scoring opportunity in the 19th minute when a long ball was sent into the box as Ethan Stevenson jumped and tried to head the ball over Jack Kilstrom but the freshman keeper was up to the challenge with a leaping save
  • The Lancers finished the first half with six shots on goal with one cleared off the line and Kilstrom positioning himself well making four saves
  • Eagles had seven first half shots but just one on frame with a couple other well struck shots blocked by a Longwood player
  • Winthrop struck first in the 50th minute as it was awarded a free kick just outside the box to the right of goal and Rodrigo Ferreira curled the free kick around the wall and past a diving Max Hinke for his first of the season
  • Good chance for the Eagles in the 67th minute on a counter as Grayson Woodard ran down a throw ball behind the defense and then fired a shot from inside the box but a Longwood defender just got his leg in front to deflect the shot wide of the post for a corner
  • In the 71st minute Nick Guido sent a cross into the box and Woodard leaped high to get his head on the ball but the shot sailed wide left of the post
  • In the 75th minute Longwood had a good opportunity as Darcy Moffat received a pass open inside the box at an angle but Kilstrom made himself big, forcing a shot wide left
  • A bad pass backwards by the Eagles in the 78th minute put Simao Coelho with a 1v1 with Kilstrom and as he cross the 18 fired a low shot to the right corner but Kilstrom came through with a kick save
  • Woodard had another good chance with his head at the back post in the 85th minute but his header said just high and wide left
  • Lancers got the equalizer in the 86th minute off a free kick as Valentin Brandis headed the ball across the mouth of the goal was put into the open net by Ethan Stevenson
  • Eagles had a good chance to get the lead late as Guido was set free behind the Lancers defense by Joe McGee but his shot as the keeper closed in was sent high over the bar in the 88th minute

Notables
  • Eagles are unbeaten through four games of the league schedule for the first time since 2015 and the 10th time in program history
  • Longwood had a 22-15 advantage in total shots and 10-2 in shots on goal
  • Corners were even at six a piece
  • It was a physical game that saw 32 fouls and 11 cards

Looking Ahead
Winthrop remains on the road for a second straight game as it heads to Clinton, S.C. on Saturday, Oct. 14 to take on Presbyterian College at 7 p.m.
