How it Happened

First Quarter | Winthrop started out with a 9-5 lead on baskets by Jada Ryce, Paige Powell, an old-fashioned three-point play by Shamyjha Price and Aaishah Barry. The start also included the Eagles scoring the first four points. The visitors would respond with four quick points to tie the game at nine at the 5:11 mark. Both team would then fail to score for the next three minutes before Longwood broke the tie on a free throw and two straight layups for a 12-9 lead. Price then stopped Winthrop's scoring drought with a jumper inside of a minute and Barry gave Winthrop a 13-12 lead a few plays later. The Lancers would answer with a bucket to lead 14-13 heading into the second period.

Second Quarter | Longwood came out by scoring the first four points of the frame. Undaunted, Winthrop went on a 9-0 run that featured a basket by Price, a free throw by Powell, two layups by Leonor Paisana and a Ryce jumper to put Winthrop back in the lead 22-18 at the 4:35 mark. Longwood ended the Winthrop scoring binge with a 9-2 run of their own to seize a 28-24 lead with nearly two minutes remaining, forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. After the break, Ryce and Tori Hall hit two consecutive jumpers to tie the game at 28 at the 1:17 mark. Both teams then missed several shots before Ryce was fouled with one second left. Ryce then made the free throw to put the Eagles up 29-28 at the half.

Third Quarter | Both teams alternated scores on the first couple of plays of the second half before the visitors went on a 10-0 run for a 40-33 lead at the 5:14 mark. Winthrop's only points in the first five minutes of the second half were two jumpers by Price. Her second gave Winthrop a 33-30 lead at the 8:20 mark just before the Lancers went on their run. Coming out of the media timeout, Longwood added one more score before Price ended Winthrop's scoring drought with a fast break layup to make the score 42-35 Lancers at the 3:44 mark. Then Powell hit two straight layups to make it a one-possession game at 42-39 with nearly two minutes left and forcing Longwood to call a timeout. The Eagles kept it going, scoring six of the next seven points to trail by one entering the final quarter. The strong finish to end the frame including Powell scoring eight straight points by herself.

Fourth Quarter | The last 10 minutes was one of the most entertaining finishes to a game Winthrop has been part of for some time. After a free throw by the visitors put them up 47-45, Price and Ryce each hit a free throw to tie the game at 47 with nine minutes left. Longwood answered with a three but Powell hit a free throw and then Price hit two jumpers to put Winthrop in the lead 52-50 at the 7:10 mark. Longwood tied it on the next play but Price again put the Eagles up with a deep three-pointer immediately thereafter to give her team the lead for good. Longwood hit a free throw only to have Price and Ryce each hit two from the charity stripe herself, giving Winthrop a 59-53 lead with three minutes left. Paisana then iced the game with two huge three-point shots from the corner to give Winthrop a 65-55 lead with nearly a minute left. The Eagles would end up finishing the game on a 17-3 run with the game tied at 52, winning 69-55.
