Rock Hill, S.C. –Winthrop rallied to defeat Presbyterian at home by a score of 59-51 on Saturday afternoon behind a smothering second half defensive effort.
Winthrop (4-16, 2-7 Big South) | Presbyterian (9-12, 5-5 Big South)
Jan. 28, 2023 | Winthrop Coliseum
Winthrop 59, Presbyterian 51
How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop started the game with a triple by
Leonor Paisana only to have PC score the next five points. Winthrop then went on an 8-5 run to tie it up at 11 with 4:19 left. The Eagle points during the run were a
Paige Powell free throw, two
Jada Ryce jumpers and another Paisana three. After PC hit a three for a 14-11 lead,
Ally Ross hit two straight three pointers and Paisana hit a jumper to give Winthrop a 19-14 lead inside of a minute. PC then concluded the quarter with one from deep just before the gun sounded and the Eagles led 19-17 going into the second quarter.
Second Quarter | Winthrop began the second quarter with one from downtown by Ryce only to have PC score the next five points. The Eagles responded with an 8-0 on a layup and two free throws by Powell and two straight scores by Ryce, giving Winthrop a 30-25 lead with 3:50 left. PC then ended the half on a 9-3 run to give them a 34-33 lead.
Third Quarter | The third quarter started with both teams alternated the first six scores, resulting in a tie game at 40 at the 5:18 mark. Winthrop's scores during this seesaw stretch were a triple and a layup by Paisana and a jumper by
Tori Hall. After PC then hit a free throw for a 41-40 lead, Winthrop would hit two more free throws by Powell and
Shamyjha Price hit a jumper with 3:08 left to give the Eagles a 44-41 lead. Price's score would be the final points of the quarter for both teams.
Fourth Quarter | Ryce started the fourth quarter with a layup but the Eagles would not score a field goal for more than seven minutes. During the drought Winthrop's only points were a free throw each by Ross and Ryce while PC tacked on four free throws and a layup. But thanks to the Eagle defense, Winthrop was able to stay in the lead up one after the fourth PC free throw, forcing turnover after turnover and bad shot after bad shot. Winthrop finally hit a field goal when Ryce scored and was fouled. Ryce then hit the free throw to give the Eagles a 51-47 lead with 1:31 left. From there it would come down to a free throw shooting contest. Winthrop didn't blink, making six to PC's one. And the defense continued to stop PC down the stretch as well after Winthrop went up 51-47. Price's final free throw gave Winthrop an 11-point edge at 59-48 with six seconds left. PC then hit a meaningless three-pointer at the buzzer and Winthrop won their second conference game of the year, 59-51.
