How it Happened
First Quarter | High Point started the game up 10-0 nearly four minutes in, prompting the Eagles to call for time. Coming out of the timeout
Paige Powell got the Eagles on the board with a jumper in the lane at the 6:05 mark. The visitors answered with three baskets and two free throws, giving the Panthers an 18-2 lead at the 1:32 mark as Winthrop failed to score for five minutes.
Jada Ryce ended the drought with five quick points by herself, including getting fouled after hitting a layup with two seconds left. At the end of the first quarter Winthrop trailed 18-7.
Second Quarter | The Panthers started the second quarter with a three-pointer but
Aaishah Barry scored to make it 21-9 High Point at the nine-minute mark. The visitors would explode with a 10-0 run to make it 31-9 at the 6:25 mark before Ryce hit a free throw. After this scoring binge High Point then hit two more three-pointers to make it 37-10 at the 4:47 mark before the Eagles scored on consecutive old-fashioned three point plays by Powell and
Shamyjha Price with Price hitting the free throw to cut the deficit to 37-15 with nearly four minutes left. Both teams then traded baskets for the rest of the quarter until High Point hit a triple with five seconds left to give them a 49-23 lead at the break.
Third Quarter | The opposition picked up right where they left off to start the second half with a three-pointer and a jumper before Powell hit a free throw to make the score 54-24 at the 8:17 mark. The Panthers continued their torrid shooting from deep with two more triples before Powell scored off a steal by Price. The visitors then hit two free throws but
Frances Brown hit a free throw and
Leonor Paisana made a layup, making the score 62-29 Panthers at the 5:27 mark. Both teams didn't score for more than four minutes until Paisana hit a jumper with a minute left. At the end of the third quarter Winthrop trailed 62-31.
Fourth Quarter | Both teams started the early minutes of the fourth quarter alternating scores until two straight Panther baskets gave them a 71-35 lead at the 7:19 mark. Powell would then hit a free throw a few plays later only to have High Point answer with three more buckets to extend their lead to 42 at the 4:02 mark. Winthrop failed to make a field goal after Powell's basket at the 8:26 mark until Price scored on the fast break off a steal, making the score 78-38 at the 3:26 mark. Powell would also hit a layup on the next Winthrop offensive possession and Ryce would hit two technical free throws a few plays later. High Point hit one more free throw to conclude the scoring for the evening as Winthrop fell 79-42.
