How it Happened
First Quarter | GW started the game up 3-0 before
Paige Powell got the Eagles on the board with a jumper at the 6:39 mark. After a score by the home team,
Tori Hall nailed a triple to tie it at five several plays later. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with four straight points coming out of a media timeout only to have Powell score two straight baskets to tie it at nine at the 1:12 mark. GW would then hit a three-pointer inside of a minute to give them a 12-9 lead heading into the second quarter.
Second Quarter | GW started out the second frame with a jumper on the fast break but
Jada Ryce and
Shamyjha Price responded with two baskets to cut the lead to 14-13 at the 8:09 mark. GW answered with four of the next five points to take an 18-14 lead only to have
Leonor Paisana hit one from downtown on the fast break to make it 18-17 in favor of the home team with 5:59 left. The Runnin' Bulldogs then went on a 7-0 run as the Eagles failed to score for four minutes. Powell would end the drought on a follow-up chance with 2:02 left but GW would score the final five points of the half to take a 30-19 lead going into the break.
Third Quarter | The two teams split the first four scores in rapid succession to start the third quarter before Price stopped the scoring pattern with a fast break off a GW turnover, leaving Winthrop trailing 35-25 at the 8:13 mark. GW would hit a layup themselves more than a minute later but Ryce would hit a free throw and Paisana hit another triple on the fast break to cut to eight at the 6:19 mark. The Runnin' Bulldogs then went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-point lead with nearly four minutes left in the quarter. Price, Powell and Paisana stopped the run with two free throws, a layup and a three-pointer, respectively. This cut the lead to 44-36 at the 2:45 mark. GW would close out the quarter by scoring six of the next seven points, resulting in a 50-37 lead.
Fourth Quarter | Winthrop began the final quarter with layups by Powell and Price to cut it to nine a minute in. but GW put the game out of reach by scoring 17 of the next 25 points to take a 67-49 lead with nearly four minutes left. Winthrop's only points during the scoring binge by the Runnin' Bulldogs were a jumper by Ryce, a Paisana triple and three Price free throws. Price would stop the run with one from downtown to make it a 15-point deficit with 2:57 remaining. The home team would then score seven of the final nine points to result in their margin of victory.
