How it Happened
First Quarter | Winthrop started the game up 2-0 on a layup by
Jada Ryce before Campbell tied it up on the next play.
Frances Brown gave Winthrop the lead back on a jumper at the 7:07 mark. The Camels scored the next five points for a 7-4 lead but the Eagles went on a 7-0 run themselves to take an 11-7 lead at the 2:37 mark on jumpers by
Tori Hall and five points by Ryce. The Camels would then score the final four points of the frame to enter the second quarter tied at 11.
Second Quarter | The Eagles scored the first four points of the second quarter on jumpers by Hall and
Paige Powell, giving them a 15-11 lead at the 8:20 mark. But Winthrop failed to score any points for more than five minutes while Campbell could notch only a three-pointer. Powell would end the drought with a jumper at the 3:09 mark. After a Campbell score on the next play, Powell hit a jumper just before the half to give Winthrop a 19-16 lead going into the locker room.
Third Quarter | Winthrop scored eight of the first twelve points to start the second half, with six of those points being Brown triples. The fast start to the second half resulted in Winthrop taking a 27-20 lead at the 6:58 mark, their largest of the game. But Campbell went on an 8-1 run to tie the contest at 28 with nearly three minutes left. Powell stopped the run by hitting a layup and getting fouled. Her subsequent free throw put Winthrop up 31-28 at the 1:47 mark. The visitors then hit one from deep on the next play to tie it again at 31 but Ryce hit two free throws inside of a minute to give the Eagles a 33-31 lead at the end of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter | The final 10 minutes of the contest was simply all Campbell. The Camels hit their first four shots of the frame, all from deep as part of a decisive 14-0 run to give them a 45-33 lead with 4:47 left to play. Winthrop failed to score their first points of the quarter until the 4:31 mark on a jumper by
Shamyjha Price. Winthrop would again fail to score for nearly another four minutes as the visitors continued their onslaught by scoring the next eight points. This gave them their largest lead of the game, up 18 at 53-35 with 1:13 left. Winthrop would then score the final five points of the game on a three-pointer by Ryce and a jumper by Brown. After a largely back-and-forth affair, Campbell would ultimately outscore Winthrop 22-7 to end the game after they entered the final quarter down two, winning in Rock Hill 53-40.
