Eagles Draw With Bulldogs In Big South Opener Tuesday Evening

Asheville, N.C. – Winthrop and UNC Asheville played to a scoreless draw, Wednesday evening in the Big South Conference opener for both teams.

Game Recap
  • First chance for the Eagles came in the 10th minute when Chela Parris slipped a pass into the box run on to by Annabel Thomas who struck a shot low but wide right of the far post
  • Each team had a couple of shots from outside the box but both goalkeepers stood their ground as the teams headed to the locker rooms scoreless at the break
  • Asheville nearly caught a break in the 49th minute when Kaiya Boyd mishit a cross that headed toward the Eagle goal and hit the top of the crossbar and the Eagles were able to clear
  • In the 53rd minute the Eagles earned a corner and Emma Smith put a service right in front of goal that Thomas jumped up and redirected the ball toward goal with her upper body as the ball bounced off the crossbar and down but was cleared away
  • Izzy Giarrizzi made a big save in the 66th minute when Taylor Gardner let a shot fly from 25 yards out and Giarrizzi just tipped enough as the ball went off the crossbar and was cleared by the defense
  • Hannah Taylor tried to break the tie in the 90th minute as she beat a defender off the dribble and then fired a shot from about 25 yards out to the right corner but Bronwyn Luitwieler was there for the save

Notables
  • The stats were nearly level in all aspects as each team had 16 shots, 4 shots on goal and the Bulldogs had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks
  • Giarrizzi made four saves to earn her second shutout of the season and 4th of her career
  • The shutout was the third of the season for the Eagles, which already matches last season's total of three
  • Eagles remain unbeaten on the road this season and are now 2-0-1

Looking Ahead
Winthrop stays on the road as it will head to Buies Creek, N.C. for a matchup with Campbell on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
