Eagles 2-0 On The Season After 3-1 Win Over VMI

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's soccer is off to a 2-0 start on the year after a 3-1 victory over VMI, Thursday evening in its home opener.

Game Recap
  • Eagles scored three unanswered starting with the first in the 27th minute
  • Winthrop earned a free kick on its half of the field taken Janae Massey who sent one long ball toward the VMI penalty area as Emma Smith flicked it on
  • Abbie McCrea ran on to the ball and flipped it ahead to Annabel Thomas who sent a volley around the top of the 18 over the head of the keeper
  • That goal held for a 1-0 lead at the half for the Eagles, who had an 8-3 advantage in shots over the course of the first 45 minutes
  • The Eagles scored two goals in the 48th minute to grab the three goal advantage
  • The first came off the foot of Chela Parris as Thomas collected a loose ball in the box after Bailey Fudala's shot was blocked and she slipped the ball to Parris in front of goal as she calmly placed  a shot into the lower right corner
  • Just seconds later Emma Smith stole the ball in the VMI half and caught the VMI keeper off her line as she lined  a shot from about 35 yards out over the head of Jillian Hall
  • The Keydets scored their lone goal in the 51st minute as Sedona Dancu beat a defender and dribbled into the box where she fired a shot past Izzy Giarrizzi at the near post from an angle

Notables
  • Winthrop finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots and 10-6 in shots on goal
  • The Eagles had three different goal scorers in the match and on the year now have five goals from five different players
  • Parris netted her first collegiate goal and now has three points after two games
  • Eagles are 2-0 for the first time since 2013

Eagles are off until Sunday, Sept. 4 when they host Davidson at 5 p.m.
