Farmville, Va. — Winthrop softball battled second-place Longwood, but dropped a doubleheader with losses of 7-3 and 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Longwood grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first as Sydney Jacobsen hit a 2-out, 3-run home run
- Lancers took a 4-0 lead in the third as Alexis Wayland hit a leadoff home run
- The lead grew to 7-0 after the Lancers pushed three across in the fourth
- Courtney Cygan led off the sixth inning to break-up the no-hit bid from Longwood's Sydney Backstrom
- After Cygan was caught stealing, Paige Rivas walked to get things going for the Winthrop offense
- Macy McCall followed with a single to put runners at the corners
- Rivas then scored on a wild pitch as McCall moved to second on the play
- Two batters later Lauren King stepped up and hit a two-run homer to cut into the Longwood lead at 7-3
- Eagles continued to battle as they manufactured another run in the seventh as Rivas scored for a second time
Game 2
- King gave the Eagles an early lead as she led off the second with a home run
- In the bottom of the third the Lancers grabbed the lead, coming through with back-to-back RBI singles by Jacobsen and Korynna Anderson with two outs
- In the fourth inning the Lancers took advantage of fielding error by the Eagles
- Lauren Fox made it 4-1 with a two out two-run single and then Sydney Guess hit a two-run homer to lead 6-1
- Eagles struck right back in the top of the fifth inning as Paige Rivas reached on a bunt single with one away
- Rivas then stole second and scored on a single by McCall to make it 6-2
- Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs as Vianna Rodriguez started things off with a single
- Rivas singled to center and then McCall walked to load the bases
- Kaitlyn Tucker plated Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 6-3
EXTRA BASES
- King had three RBI on the day, pushing her season total to 21 which tied her career-best (had 21 in 2021)
- King got hit by a pitch in the second game of the doubleheader, giving her 17 HBP on the year and one shy of typing the program record for a single-season (18 – Sarah Magee)
- Paige Rivas had three hits in the second game of the doubleheader, her 5th three-hit game of the year
- Rivas, who leads the team in batting (.350), has scored a run in four straight games and also stole her team-best 24th base of the season
- The 24 stolen bases by Rivas are tied for the 5th most in a single-season by an Eagle
