Eagles Fall At Longwood Sunday Afternoon

Farmville, Va. — Winthrop softball suffered a 9-3 loss at Longwood Sunday afternoon as both teams wrapped-up league play and the regular season.

RECORD: Winthrop (18-37, 10-17 Big South) | Longwood (30-22, 21-6 Big South)
WINTHROP LEADERS: Paige Rivas (2-for-4, R, SB) | Ashton Vanhouse (2-for-3, R, RBI) |
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Alexis Wayland gave Longwood a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a home run
  • Lauren Taylor led off the second inning with a home run for a 3-0 lead, but Reese Basinger settled in
  • Basinger proceeded to strike out the next three batters to end the inning
  • Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the third inning with one out but the Lancers turned a double play to end the threat
  • The Eagles cut into the lead in the top of the fourth thanks to some hustle from Ashton Vanhouse
  • Vanhouse singled with one out and then moved to second on a single through the right side from Bailey Warren
  • An errant throw by the Lancers went into foul territory as Vanhouse raced home from second on the play
  • Lancers increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Mason Basdikis hit a grand slam
  • Eagles responded with two runs in the top of the fifth
  • Paige Rivas led off with a single to second but the second baseman made a late throw to first and went into foul territory and down the line as she raced all the way around the bases to score
  • Later in the inning the Eagles had runners at the corners and Vanhouse came through with an RBI single.
  • Lancers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth

EXTRA BASES
  • Eagles finished with three stolen bases on the day, giving them 100 for the season
  • It is just the third time in program history a Winthrop team reached 100 steals in a single-season and the first time in 26 years
  • Macy McCall stole her 23rd base of the year and 69th of her Winthrop career and is now two shy of Winthrop's all-time leader
  • Paige Rivas finished the Longwood series 6-for-11 at the plate with four runs
