ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Winthrop baseball program defeated UNC Asheville Thursday evening to take game one of the series.
The Eagles are 18-32 (11-11 Big South) overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After two scoreless innings, UNC Asheville used an error and a two-run homer to take an early 3-0 lead
- Spyke homered to cut the lead to one
- The Bulldogs used two more home runs in the fourth to increase their lead to 8-2
- Winthrop scored six runs in the fifth to even the score as Joey Tepper double in a run, Fewell singled in two runs, Hooks doubled in Fewell, Spyke singled in Hooks, and Taul double in Spyke
- Another two-run homer for Asheville gave them a 10-8 lead
- The Eagles used a fielder's choice, an single, three straight RBI singles, a fielding error, and a two RBI double to put up eight runs in the eighth
- Winthrop shut down the Bulldogs to provide the final margin
