Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop softball fell 7-2 to Campbell in the final game of its Big South Conference series, Sunday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Campbell struck in the top of the first as Noemi Cortez came through with a two out RBI single to left
- In the top of the third, the Camels added to their lead by taking advantage of a couple of Winthrop errors
- Delaney McDilda provided the big hit with a two-run double down the right field line
- Paige Rivas made a diving effort on the play but was unable to come up with the catch as McDilda raced to second and runners scored from second and third
- In the bottom of the fourth, Paige Rivas drew a leadoff walk and then stole second
- Two batters later Lauren King came through with a single to right center that scored Rivas
- Eagles got another run in the 5th inning as Ashton Vanhouse got things started with a leadoff single
- Vanhouse stole second and then moved to third as the throw found its way to center field
- Vanhouse then scored on a ground out by Vianna Rodriguez
- With two outs in the top of the sixth, Tyra Parker hit a two-run triple to center for a 6-2 lead
- Campbell added one more in the seventh on a two-out single to center by Danielle Northrup
- King was hit to lead off the seventh as the Eagles didn't go down without a fight
- Ashley Wood pinch-ran for King and moved to second after pinch-hitter Ella McGalliard drew a walk
- Two batters later, Mackenzie Smith singled down the right field line as Wood raced around third to score on the play
- With runners on the corner and one out, Rodriguez popped up as the second baseman made a full spring to chase down the ball for the catch at the right field line behind first base
- Then Isabella Clark came in to pinch-hit and grounded out to short
EXTRA BASES
- The game was delayed 61 minutes due to lightning to start off the bottom of the sixth inning
- King was hit by a pitch in the 7th inning, the 16th time she's been hit on the season
- King now ranks 5th all-time in program history for HBP and her 16th this season are the second-most by a Winthrop player in a single-season
- It was also the 40th time this season a Winthrop player was hit, which breaks the single-season record which was set by the 2021 team (39)
ON DECK
Winthrop will be back in action next weekend as they finish the regular season with a three-game series in Farmville, Va. The series against Longwood begins on Saturday, May 7 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. and will conclude on Sunday, May 8 with a single-game at 1 p.m.
