Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop softball split a doubleheader with Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon, capturing the opening game 2-1 before falling 6-3 in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Eagles got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the first
- Macy McCall led off the game with a single to left on a 1-2 count
- Paige Rivas followed with a triple to right center as both hustled around the bases and McCall scored for the 1-0 lead
- Kaitlyn Tucker followed with a pop to right over the head of the first baseman as the right fielder came running in and attempted a diving catch but couldn't hold on as Tucker was save at first on the single and Rivas came home for a 2-0 lead
- In the third inning, Charleston Southern threatened with runners at second and third but Reese Basinger ended the top half on a strikeout
- In the top of the sixth, Madison Koger pulled a shot down the left field line that just curled in the foul pole for a solo shot
- That was all Basinger allowed as she earned her fifth win of the season after allowing the one run on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts
Game 2
- Buccaneers struck first in the top of the second as the first two batters reached by getting hit by a pitch
- Two batters later L. Markle pulled a 2-2 pitch down the line that just snuck over the fence and inside the foul pole for a three-run home run
- Charleston Southern hit another three-run homer in the top of the third inning for a 6-0 lead as R. Lewis hit one to left center
- In the bottom of the seventh, Bailey Warren was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning
- Ashton Vanhouse followed with a bunt single as pinch-runner McKenzie West raced around to third
- After Vanhouse stole second, Mackenzie Smith blasted the first home run of her collegiate career over the left center field fence to cut the deficit in half at 6-3
- Bella Roy tossed 4.2 innings of relief allowing just two hits while issuing no walks and striking out three
EXTRA BASES
- Eagles took the opening game of the series and have now taken game one in 4-of-5 Big South series this season
- Paige Rivas had two hits in the second game of the doubleheader, her 12th multi-hit game of the year as she has hit safely in three straight games
- Smith's three-run homer in the second game was a career-high for RBI in a single-game
- McCall scored a run in the first game as she now has 91 in her career as she approaches 100
- Eagles earned their 34th hit-by-pitch on the season, which is tied for the 3rd most in a single-season
- In the second game there were three, three-run homers combined as all three included a runner that reached after getting hit by a pitch
