Eagles Fall At South Carolina Thursday Night

Columbia, S.C. — Winthrop softball dropped a 7-1 mid-week non-conference contest at South Carolina, Thursday evening.

GAME INFORMATION
RECORD: Winthrop (11-25, 5-7 Big South) | South Carolina (19-17, 2-10 SEC)
WINTHROP LEADERS: Isabella Clark (2-for-2, RBI) | Kaitlyn Tucker (1-for-4, R, 2B)
WHAT HAPPENED
  • Eagles struck in the top of the first as Kaitlyn Tucker doubled to left with two outs
  • Isabella Clark stepped in and singled to right field, scoring Tucker from second
  • South Carolina responded with a five-run bottom of the first
  • An RBI single by Hannah Kumiyama tied the game at 1-1 and then a two-run double down the left field line by Maddie Gallagher for the lead
  • A two-run single to left center by Carlie Henderson brought home two more runs for a 5-1 advantage
  • In the fourth inning the Eagles drew three straight 2-out walks to force a pitching change for the Gamecocks
  • Skylar Trahan came in and got Courtney Cygan to ground out to third on a 1-2 count to end the threat
  • Gamecocks added another run in the fourth inning as J. Fabian drew a leadoff walk and then stole second
  • As she arrived at second the throw from Isabella Clark hit Tucker's glove at the same time Fabian slid into second and the ball popped all the way into left center allowing Fabian to come all the way home for a 6-1 lead
  • In the top of the sixth the Eagles drew three straight walks to load the bases with no outs, but were unable to drive in a run

EXTRA BASES
  • This was the 65th meeting all-time between the Eagles and Gamecocks, one of the longest running series for Winthrop against a non-conference opponent
  • Eagles got base runners but finished the game 0-for-4 with the bases loaded, 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight base runners
  • Reese Basinger tossed five innings of relief allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts

Winthrop jumps right back into Big South Conference action with a three-game series against Charleston Southern at home Apr. 9-10. The series begins on Saturday, Apr. 9 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m..
