Patriots Point, S.C. — Winthrop softball earned a doubleheader split at the College of Charleston, Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles opened with a 3-0 win before falling 2-1 in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Winthrop jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second courtesy of an Ashton Vanhouse RBI single
- Courtney Cygan walked with one out and then moved to second when Lauren King reached on an error
- Vanhouse stepped in and singled up the middle to score Cygan from second
- Two innings later the Eagles added to their lead as Cygan set the table again
- Cygan led off with a single up the middle and then stole second
- Cygan moved to third on a passed ball and two batters later Vanhouse singled to right center to score Cygan
- After Vanhouse stole second, Mackenzie Smith came through with a single to center, scoring Vanhouse for a 3-0 lead
- Reese Basinger tossed a complete game to earn her 4th shutout of the season as she allowed just three hits, didn't issue a walk and struck out eight
- Basinger allowed just one base runner over the first four innings and didn't run into trouble until the sixth inning
- With one out in the bottom of the sixth the Cougars got a single from Jenna Carter and then Basinger hit a batter
- But the Eagle defense came through as the second out came on a force at third on a grounder and then Vianna Rodriguez threw out the runner trying to steal second
Game 2
- Cougars took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two out, two run triple by Windham
- In the sixth inning the Eagles got a leadoff single by Ashley Wood trying to get the offense going
- Macy McCall and Paige Rivas hit back-to-back ground outs that led to a force out at second base followed by a ground out from Kaitlyn Tucker to end the top half
- In the top of the seventh, the Eagles gave themselves a chance to tie the game
- Courtney Cygan tripled to center field with one out
- Smith lined out to second before Vanhouse reached on a fielding error as Cygan raced home to make it a one run game
- Isabella Clark worked the count to 2-1 before lining out to second base to end the game
- Sydney Boulware suffered the loss as she allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and strikeout in two innings
- Bella Roy tossed four innings of relief allowing just three hits with no walks and five strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- In the four shutouts she's tossed this season, Basinger hasn't allowed more than three hits in any of them
- Paige Rivas stole second in the third inning of the first game to reach 20 on the year
- Winthrop now has three different players with 20 or more stolen bases on the season
- It is the first time in program history the Eagles have had three or more players steal at least 20 bases in a single-season
ON DECK
Winthrop hosts Campbell this weekend in its final home Big South Conference series. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 30 with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday, May 1 with a single game at 1 p.m.
