Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop overcame an early five goal deficit to earn a 20-14 win at Wofford College, Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference women's lacrosse action. With the win the Eagles improve to 4-12 overall and 3-5 in the Big South while Wofford falls to 4-11 overall and 2-6 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wofford opened a 2-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the first quarter until Molly Dankowski got the Eagles on the board
- The Terriers proceeded to score four straight goals over the next three minutes and 22 seconds to build a 5-1 advantage
- Claire Witmer ended the run of goals by the Terriers as she had the ball in front, spun to her left and whipped a shot into the net
- Katie Witmer cut the deficit in half at 6-3 a minute and a half later as she worked herself free at out wide and into front of goal where she shot and scored
- Wofford led 7-3 in the final seconds of the first quarter but Alyssa Angelo found the back of the net with one second remaining to make it a three-goal deficit
- Angelo scored the first goal of the second quarter to make it a two goal game and then minutes later Lauren Asher scored to once again make it a two-goal game
- Winthrop kept the deficit at two goals and trailed 10-8 at the half
- Angelo made it a one goal game at the 13:50 mark of the third quarter
- After Wofford took back a two goal lead on a Carley Irvin goal, Winthrop scored two straight to tie the match
- Eagles took advantage of being a man up as Angelo scored followed by a free position goal from Savanah Paton to tie it at 13-13
- The Terriers led 13- 12 with 6:40 to play in the third quarter when the Eagles put the clamp down defensively and turned up the offense
- Paton tied the game at 13-13 with 4:52 left in the third quarter and that sparked eight straight goals by the Eagles
- Claire Witmer scored the go ahead goal at the 3:33 mark for a 14-13 lead
- Wofford did add a late goal with 48 seconds, which is the only goal the Eagles have allowed in the last two league games in the fourth quarter (Shutout Furman in the 4th)
- Angelo led the team and all players with six goals and nine points
- Asher, Dankowski and Claire Witmer each had three goals
NOTABLES
- Angelo tied her career-high with six goals and set a career-best in points for a single-game with nine
- It was Angelo's 6th career game with five or more goals
- The 20 goals were a season-high for the Eagles and the most by an Eagle team in a league road game since scoring 21 at Presbyterian College Apr. 14, 2021
- For Dankowski it was her 4th game this season with at least three goals and it was the 3rd for Claire Witmer
- Eagles had a 38-31 advantage in shots and ground balls (18-18) and draw controls (19-19) were even
- Eagles have now won back-to-back road games
