Eagles Tripped Up In Regular Season Finale At Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Winthrop lacrosse program fell to Longwood in the regular season finale on Wednesday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams traded goals early before Alyssa Angelo and Lauren Asher notched back to back scores for a 4-2 Eagle lead
  • Longwood scored three of the next four goals to tie the game at five just a few seconds before the end of the first period
  • Winthrop came out strong in the second period with two scores from Angelo, one from Asher, and one from Claire Witmer to take a 9-5 lead
  • Both teams scored two goals soon thereafter before a Lancer goal just one minute before the halftime break cut the Eagle lead to 11-8
  • Longwood scored the first two goals of the second half, slicing the lead to 11-10 and later tied the game at 12 heading into the final stanza
  • The Lancers notched two goals for a 14-12 lead
  • Winthrop closed the lead to one in the last thirty seconds and had a free position shot to tie just before the final buzzer, but it was blocked
