BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Winthrop baseball program fell to Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon, dropping the conference series in the process.
The Eagles are 13-22 (7-5 Big South).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles got two runners on in the first inning, but were unable to get either home
- With three runners on, the Runnin' Bulldogs laced a grand slam to center field in the bottom of the frame for a quick 4-0 lead
- Winthrop came back with two runs in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice
- Gardner-Webb put up five more in the bottom of the inning on a bunt single, a 2 RBI single, a sacrifice fly, and another RBI single
- The Eagles countered with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third for their third run of the afternoon
- The home team used an RBI groundout and an RBI single for an 11-3 lead
- Taul doubled and advanced to third in the fourth inning, but was stranded there
- Gardner-Webb kept the onslaught up in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double and a two-run home run
- Hooks' double and a bases-loaded walk gave the Eagles their fourth and fifth runs of the day
- The Runnin' Bulldogs extended their cushion again with an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly in the eighth
- Winthrop had runners on the corners in the ninth, but a strikeout ended the game
