Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Gardner-Webb Friday Evening

Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop softball swept a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb Friday evening as it opened with a 10-0 win and earned a 4-3 win in nine innings in the nightcap.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • For the 15th time on the season, Winthrop grabbed the lead in the first inning
  • Paige Rivas drew a one out walk, stole second and then scored on an RBI double from Kaitlyn Tucker
  • Tucker moved to third on the play as Bailey Warren followed with a walk and then stole second
  • With two outs, Lauren King singled to score Tucker and then Mackenzie Smith drove home Warren on a single to right center
  • In the top of the second, Ashton Vanhouse led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Macy MCall who moved to second on the play
  • Paige Rivas followed with a triple to the gap in left center, scoring both runners for a 5-0 lead
  • McCall made it 6-0 with an RBI single in the third inning, scoring Vianna Rodriguez who had reached on a one out single
  • Eagles added two more in the fourth as Warren reached on an error and then hustled all the way around from first to score on an error
  • Then Courtney Cygan scored on an RBI groundout from King
  • McCall led off the fifth inning with a home run to right and later in the inning Warren plated Paige Rivas on a single to right center
  • Reese Basinger tossed a complete game shutout giving up three hits while walking two and striking out two
Game 2
  • Gardner-Webb grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first as Kayleigh Nicholson drove home Katie Mitchell on a single
  • Eagles first threat came in the fourth inning as Paige Rivas singled to left and moved to second when the outfielder over ran the ball
  • Tucker then walked but Warren flied out to right and Cygan fouled out to third to end the threat
  • In the bottom of the fourth, three straight singles by Gardner-Webb loaded the bases with no outs
  • Sydney Boulware came in to pitch and got out of the jam allowing just one run on a single up the middle that just made its way into the outfield
  • In the top of the fifth, Smith doubled to left to get things going for the Eagles
  • Smith was replaced by pinch-runner Peyton Rivas who then scored on a single to center by Isabella Clark
  • Vanhouse and McCall had back-to-back singles to load the bases with one away
  • Paige Rivas hit into a fielder's choice as Gardner-Webb threw home for the force out and then Tucker flied out to right to end the top half
  • Eagles tied the game in the top of the sixth with two outs as Cygan reached on an error and moved to second with one out
  • Two batters later Smith doubled down the left field line, scoring Cygan and tying the game at 2-2
  • In the top of the seventh, McCall drew a one out walk to get something started for the Eagles
  • Paige Rivas then hit a grounder that nipped the glove of the pitcher and as the second baseman tried to field it the ball bounced right to the shortstop standing on second base for the force out
  • Paige Rivas then stole second
  • In the bottom of the seventh Araceli Pesqueira tripled down the right field line with one out
  • After issuing a walk to put runners at the corners, Boulware struck out Nicholson and then got a pop up to take the game into extra innings
  • Eagles grabbed the lead in the top of the ninth as Vanhouse started things off with a single to left followed by a walk from McCall
  • Three batters later with two outs and runners at the corners, Warren doubled to center
  • Warren hit a line shot to center that was just out of the reach of the center fielder trying to chase it down as both runners came around to score
  • Gardner-Webb did manage a run in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at third base with two outs but Boulware struck out Riley McCurry to end the game
  • Boulware tossed six innings of relief allowing one run on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts to earn her 5th win of the year

EXTRA BASES
  • The Eagles shutout Gardner-Webb in game one and have now done so in four of the last five meetings
  • Basinger won her fourth straight start as she recorded her second career shutout
  • McCall now has a hit in 11 straight conference games and Paige Rivas has now hit safely in six straight league games
  • In game one of the doubleheader the Eagles had five stolen bases, the fourth time this season they've had five or more in a game
  • Winthrop has now won the opening game in five of its six Big South Conference series this season
  • McCall scored three times on the day and now has 97 career runs as she closes in on 100
