Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop softball took the nightcap 2-1 over College of Charleston to split a doubleheader, Wednesday evening in non-conference action. The Eagles dropped the opening game 7-1.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with one out
- Paige Rivas hit a shot right back at the pitcher as she came home for the force out and then Bailey Warren grounded out to first base
- Cougars struck first in the top of the fourth inning as Shealyn Starks hit a two-run homer to left center
- College of Charleston pushed five runs across in the top of the 5th inning
- Cougars loaded the bases with no outs leading 3-0 when Jenna Helberg was hit-by-a-pitch for a 4-0 lead
- The Cougars then plated runs on back-to-back singles to highlight the inning
- In the bottom of the sixth Warren drew a leadoff walk and then moved to second on a fielder's choice
- Courtney Cygan singled up the middle to load the bases for Lauren King
- King ripped a shot right back at the pitcher, who knocked the ball down and made a throw to home plate for the force out
- Warren came home on a wild pitch as all of the runners moved over
- Peyton Rivas then walked to load the bases again but the Cougars turned a double play to end the inning
- In the bottom of the seventh the Eagles loaded the bases again as Macy McCall and Paige Rivas reached on infield singles
- Warren drew her second walk of the game to load the bases but Isabella Clark grounded into a double play
Game 2
- Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of its speed on the bases
- McCall led off with an infield single to short, just beating the throw to first
- McCall then stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt by Paige Rivas and Cygan walked to put runners at the corners
- Cygan took off and stole second but the throw from the catcher went into center field as McCall raced home for the early lead
- In the bottom of the fourth, Lauren King hit a solo home run to left with one away for a 2-0 lead
- The Cougars cut the Winthrop lead in half in the top of the sixth when Mia Dittoe hit a leadoff home run to left
- Reese Basinger retired the Cougars in order to clinch the win as she tossed a complete game allowing the one run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- With her single in the top of the first in game two of the doubleheader, Paige Rivas pushed her hitting streak to six games
- Basinger has now earned a win in three consecutive starts
- McCall had one steal in game two, pushing her season total to 20 and career total to 81
- In her Winthrop career, McCall now has 66 stolen bases and is six away from breaking the program's career mark of 71
- McCall is now six runs away from 100 in her career
- Courtney Cygan made her first start at shortstop in the absence of Kaitlyn Tucker and was perfect in the field with four putouts and five assists
- Winthrop was 6-for-6 stealing bases on the day and now has 78 on the year moving into 8th most in a single-season
ON DECK
Winthrop heads to Boiling Springs, N.C. Apr. 15-16 as it jumps back into Big South Conference action against Gardner-Webb. The series will open on Friday, Apr. 15 with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. and wrap-up on Saturday, Apr. 16 with the final game of the series at noon.
