ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop lacrosse program won their first match of 2022 with an 18-14 triumph over visiting Youngstown State.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Two goals from Alyssa Angelo and a goal from Savanah Paton gave the Eagles an early 3-0 lead
• Youngstown State struck back with two scores of their own to get within one at the 4:23 mark of the first half
• Paton and Grayson McKenzie scored late in the first quarter saw Winthrop to a 5-2 lead
• Angelo and Molly Dankowski extended the Eagle lead to 7-2 early in the second period
• Three straight goals from the Penguins cut the lead to two
• Winthrop scored the last three goals of the half for a 10-5 lead
• Youngstown State scored four straight times to get within 10-9
• The Eagles went on a 4-0 run, capped off by an Ellie Dutton goal, gave Winthrop a commanding 14-9 lead.
• The Penguins did score five of the last nine goals, but the Eagles held strong for an 18-14 win

• Angelo had five goals, two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and an assist
• Dutton had four goals and one ground ball
• Dankowski had three goals, an assist and a caused turnover while Paton had three goals and a draw control
• Lexi Jonson had eight draw controls while Krystal Beebe had four
• Johnson recorded six saves
