Huntington, W.Va. — A four-run fifth inning helped lead Winthrop softball to a 7-3 victory over UMES, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Thundering Herd Round Robin

WHAT HAPPENED
- Eagles fell behind in the bottom of the first as Julia Garcia doubled to right center scoring two
- Winthrop got one back in the second as Vianna Rodriguez drew a one out walk followed by a single from Lauren Daniels
- Kaitlyn Tucker then sacrificed both runners over and Ashton Vanhouse came through with an RBI single
- Eagles took the lead in the 3rd inning as Rivas singled through the left side to lead off the inning
- Lauren King then reached on a bunt single to put two runners on
- After a fielder's choice off the bat of Lauren Hutcherson led to a force out at second, Winthrop had runners at the corners
- Mackenzie Smith tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI ground out to short and then Rodriguez delivered a two-out single to right to score Hutcherson for the 3-2 lead
- Winthrop opened the game up in the 5th inning, pushing four runs across for a 7-2 advantage
- Rivas had another leadoff single and then moved to second on a fielding error on the play
- King came through with a single to center to plate Rivas
- Later in the inning Rodriguez had an RBI single and Tucker drove in two for the five run lead
- UMES added a run in the 5th on a two-out home run by Ah-Nayia Oglesby
- The game was called after five innings due to storms
- Reese Basinger earned her second win of the season with a complete game of five innings allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- Rivas finished the game 3-for-3 as she extended her hitting streak to nine games, the longest by an Eagle this season
- Tucker and Rodriguez had their second multi-RBI games on the season
- Eagles finished the weekend 4-1 and batted .336 as a team while holding opponents to .217
- Winthrop doubled-up its opponents in runs 28-14
ON DECK
Winthrop will be back in action Wednesday, Mar. 9 at 4 p.m. when it travels to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. for a doubleheader against the College of Charleston.
