Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop scored a season-high in runs to open up Big South Conference play with a 17-10 victory over North Carolina A&T, Saturday afternoon on Terry Field.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Winthrop loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but was unable to take advantage
- Eagles didn't waste chances in the second inning as Mackenzie Smith led off the inning reaching on an error by the third baseman
- Smith then moved to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a single by Kaitlyn Tucker
- Tucker took off for second and as the ball was arriving at second Smith took off for home and scored
- Ashton Vanhouse followed with a grounder to second that was botched by the second baseman and Tucker hustled around third to score on the play for a 2-0 lead
- Vanhouse stole second and then three batters later with two outs, Baily Warren launched one over the fence in left field for a 4-0 lead
- Lauren Hutcherson followed with a solo shot to left center, the first of her collegiate career which capped off a five run inning
- The Aggies hit a couple of home runs in the top of the third to make it a two-run game, but the Eagles responded in the bottom half
- Macy McCall laid down a bunt single with runners at first and second and beat the throw to first which got away into foul territory
- McCall advanced to second while Vanhouse and Tucker came around to score on the play for a 7-3 lead
- A six-run fourth had the Aggies on top as they had homers from Headen, Patmon and Tresvik
- Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, which began with Vanhouse drawing a walk and stealing second
- After moving to third on a wild pitch, Vanhouse stole home when McCall took second to make it a one run game
- The Eagles eventually loaded the bases and pinch-hitter Ella McGalliard came through with a bases clearing double for an 11-9 lead
- Winthrop wasn't done as Tucker led off the sixth with a homer to left
- Winthrop loaded the bases again and Lauren King was hit by a pitch to bring home Paige Rivas for a 14-10 lead
- Vianna Rodriguez had a ground out RBI to second and then Smith doubled to right center for the 17-10 advantage
- Bella Roy tossed 3.2 innings of relief allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- Rivas finished the game 2-for-3 and extended her hitting streak to 10 games
- Winthrop finished the game 8-for-21 (.381) with runners in scoring position and was 5-for-6 when leading off an inning
- Not only did the Eagles post a season-high 17 runs in the game, they had a season-high eight stolen bases as well
- The 17 runs were the most by an Eagle team since a 17-0 win over Delaware State on Feb. 21, 2020
