Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop completed a Big South Conference opening sweep of North Carolina A&T after claiming both games of the doubleheader Sunday afternoon on Terry Field. Winthrop took the first game 7-4 and the nightcap 10-2 in five innings.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Winthrop struck first in the bottom of the third, pushing three runs across
- It started with a leadoff double by Kaitlyn Tucker as she hustled to second on a hit to centerfield
- Ashton Vanhouse then laid down a bunt single as Tucker moved to third but scored when the third baseman's throw to first was late and off the mark
- Vanhouse then stole second and came home on an RBI double to left center by Macy McCall
- McCall made it 3-0 in favor of the Eagles when she scored on a passed ball
- Eagles headed into the 5th inning with a 3-1 lead as they scored three more for a five run advantage
- Lauren Hutcherson and Lauren King drew back-to-back walks to start off the inning
- Two batters later Vianna Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to load the bases
- Tucker stepped in and ripped a shot to left, scoring Hutcherson
- Two batters later, McCall singled up the middle, scoring two runs for the 6-1 lead
- Aggies scored three in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom half Bailey Warren led off with a shot down the left field line for a three-run cushion
- Reese Basinger tossed a complete game to earn the win in the circle as she allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and career-high eight strikeouts
Game 2
- Eagles continued to pour it on offensively as they jumped on the Aggies with four runs in the bottom of the first
- With one away, Paige Rivas singled to third base, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball
- Warren followed with a walk and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position
- Hutcherson stepped in and singled to center, scoring Rivas
- King then stood in and doubled down the left field line for a 3-0 lead
- Rodriguez made it 4-0 on a sacrifice fly to left
- Bottom of the third Eagles used some speed to add to their lead as Courtney Cygan pinch-ran for Hutcherson after a leadoff walk
- Cygan stole second, then stole third and in the attempt forced a quick throw that got past third base and into left field as she raced home for the run
- Aggies scored two in the top of the fourth on RBI singles from J. Bennett and K. Taylor
- Winthrop responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth with another four run inning
- Rivas and Hutcherson provided RBI singles while Mackenzie Smith had an RBI grounded and Ella McGalliard drew a pinch-hit walk with the bases loaded for a 9-2 lead
- In bottom of the fifth Rivas led off with an infield single and stole second to get into scoring position
- Warren singled to put runners at the corners and then stole second
- Hutcherson stepped in and doubled to left to score Rivas and end the game on the run rule
EXTRA BASES
- The Eagles finished with 14 stolen bases on the day, 11 of which came in the 10-2 win in five innings
- Winthrop had eight different players on the day steal at least one base
- Winthrop has won five of its last six Big South conference series dating back to last season
- Have now won four straight and seven of the last eight games
- Eagles scored 10 or more runs in two of the three games in the series, the first time since 2019 in a series at Radford they scored 10 or more in two games of a conference series
- The hitting streak for Rivas came to an end at 10 straight, but she has now extended her streak of reaching base to 12 in a row
- Warren owns the top current hit streak on the team with five straight
- This is the first 3-0 start to conference play since the Eagles opened 3-0 in 2017
