ELON, N.C. – The Winthrop lacrosse program started well against Elon, but the Phoenix took over in the second half and dealt the Eagles a 19-9 defeat.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Elon scored the opening goal of the match less than four minutes in for the early lead
• Katie Witmer and Lauren Asher then scored less than a minute apart to give Winthrop a 2-1 lead
• The Phoenix notched the next four scores to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter
• Elon scored the first two goals of the second period for a four-goal lead
• Savanah Paton and Molly Dankowski sliced the elad to two with back-to-back scores
• The Phoenix extended the lead to 9-4 before Claire Witmer scored twice, including with three seconds to play, to cut the halftime deficit to three
• Elon scored eight consecutive times in the third quarter for a commanding 17-6 lead
• The Phoenix scored twice more for their biggest lead of the day
• Dankowski, Claire Witmer, and Ellie Dutton notched goals down the stretch to provide the final margin

• Claire Witmer led the Eagles with three goals and an assist while Dankowski added two goals
• Dankowski also led the way with three draw controls while Paton caused two turnovers
