Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop opened the day with a 3-1 win before falling 5-3 to Hampton as the teams split a doubleheader, Friday afternoon in Big South Conference action.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
- Macy McCall led off the game with a single to center and then stole second
- Later in the inning McCall scored for the early lead
- In the third inning McCall led off with a triple to left and then stole home to make it 2-0
- Hampton cut the deficit in half in the 6th as Janae Lyles hit a solo home run with one out
- In the top of the seventh, the Eagles added some insurance as Ashton Vanhouse had a one-out single and then stole second
- McCall stood in and doubled to center which scored Vanhouse for the 3-1 lead
- Sydney Boulware tossed a complete game to earn the win in the circle, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts
Game 2
- Hampton struck first with a run in the bottom of the first
- The leadoff batter K. Bedell reached on a fielding error and two batters later scored
- Leading 2-0 in the third inning the Pirates added two more runs
- The first came on a single by T. Washington and then second an RBI groundout by L. Brooks
- Winthrop got on the board in the top of the fourth as Lauren Hutcherson reached on an error to lead things off
- Lauren King followed by reaching on an error as Hutcherson moved to second
- Two batters later Hutcherson stole third while King was thrown out trying to steal second
- Isabella Clark singled to score Hutcherson with two outs
- Eagles got two more back in the fifth as McCall led off the inning with a single
- Paige Rivas then reached on a fielder's choice as the ball was thrown away trying to get McCall at second and she raced all the way around to score on the play
- Rivas, who had moved to second on the play, advanced to third on a wild pitch
- Ella McGalliard walked to put runners at the corners with no outs
- Two batters later King was hit by a pitch to load the bases
- Lauren Daniels hit a ground ball to second base as the throw home got the second out on a force out
- Kaitlyn Tucker followed with a single to score McGalliard and get the Eagles within two runs of the Pirates
- In the sixth the Eagles threatened as Vanhouse led off with a single
- McCall reached on a fielder's choice as both runners were safe and then Rivas reached on an error as the Eagles had runners at the corners as Vanhouse was thrown out at second
- McGalliard stepped in and hit a line shot to center as McCall was doubled-up on the play to end the threat
- In the 7th inning the Eagles had another good chance to push some runs across
- Courtney Cygan led off with a pinch-hit single followed by a single from King
- Daniels hit a grounder to short as Cygan was out at third on the force out
- The final two batters struck out and flew out to center to end the game
EXTRA BASES
- In the first game of the doubleheader the Eagles scored in the first inning, the 14th game on the year they scored at least one run in the first
- Boulware earned her first Big South win in the circle and fourth overall this season
- King has a hit in four straight games and has reached base in five straight
- McCall had two steals on the day and is now eight steals away from Winthrop's all-time career record (Charlene Smith – 71)
