Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop suffered a 7-5 loss to Ball State Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Winthrop Eagle Invitational.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Ball State scored in the top of the first with two outs as the inning was kept alive by a fielding error
- The two base runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch and then the lead runner scored on a passed ball
- Macy McCall led off the bottom of the first with a single as Paige Rivas beat out a slow roller to short to put two on with no outs
- Lauren King walked to load the bases and two batters Lauren Daniels scored McCall from third on a sac fly to left
- Courtney Cygan walked to load the bases again but Sydney Boulware struck out swinging on a 2-2 count
- Ball State jumped back in the lead 2-1 in the second when Armendariz hit a solo shot to center with two away
- In the bottom of the second Isabella Clark led off with a double-double down the right field line followed by a single by Ashton Vanhouse to put runners at the corners
- The Eagles stranded both as the next three batters struck out
- In the Top of the 3rd, the Cardinals added four more runs as Amaia Daniel and Trinity Eckerty provided two-run singles
- Trailing 7-1 heading into the sixth, the Eagles tried to battle back
- Lauren Hutcherson got it started drawing a leadoff walk and then Clark walked to put two on
- Vanhouse advanced the runners on a ground out to the pitcher
- McCall followed with a ground out to second but scoring Hutcherson to make it 7-2
- Rivas followed with a single to left field to score Clark
- Then King singled up the middle as Rivas rounded third for home and despite a short throw from the center, the second baseman Daniel scooped the throw cleanly and turned to make a perfect throw home to get Rivas at the plate for the third out
- Pinch-hitter Mackenzie Smith drew a leadoff walk to start the seventh
- Daniels walked to put two on and then a passed ball moved Smith to third and Daniels to second
- Two batters later, Clark came through with a single down the right field line to score both to cut the deficit to 7-5
EXTRA BASES
- McCall has 70 stolen bases in her career and is closing in on 100 career runs with (94)
- McCall also moved into a tied for 3rd on the Winthrop all-time stolen base list, now trailing the all-time leader by 17 (Charlene Smith, 71)
- King has now reached safely in seven straight games while McCall has a streak of six straight
- Winthrop finished the game 5-for-7 leading off an inning

Winthrop is back on the road as it heads to St. George, Utah for the Dixie State Tournament, opening up play on Friday, Feb. 25 at 2:30 p.m. against Weber State.
