Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop softball dropped two hard fought contests Saturday afternoon on day two of the Winthrop Eagle Invitational. Eagles opened the day with a 2-1 loss to Robert Morris and fell 6-4 to Western Carolina.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Robert Morris
- Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third as Ashton Vanhouse led off with a double down the left field line
- Vanhouse moved to third on a passed ball followed by Lauren King drawing a walk to put runners at the corners
- Peyton Rivas pinch-ran for King and stole second
- Bailey Warren stepped in and hit into a fielder's choice as Vanhouse was thrown out at home trying to score on the play
- The next batter was Ella McGalliard and she delivered a single to right center to score Rivas
- Robert Morris led off the seventh with a homerun off the bat of Charlotte Grover
- Meadow Sacadura followed with a double to right center and then Anna Resnik singled to the pitcher to put runners at the corners
- Reese Basinnger struck out the next batter but Julia Ehrman reached on a fielder's choice as everyone was safe
- Pinch-runner Brittney Siebert scored on a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead
- Lauren Daniels singled with two outs, but Kaitlyn Tucker struck out swinging to end the game
- Eagles were 4-for-7 when leading off an inning and finished with 12 runners left on base (1-for-13 with runners in scoring position)
- Basinger tossed a complete game allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts
vs. Western Carolina
- Catamounts struck in the top of the first as Sydney Boulware struck out Myra Twitty on a wild pitch as Brooklynn Brewington came into score and Twitty raced safely to first on the wild pitch
- In the bottom of the first Macy McCall walked to lead off and then stole second
- Paige Rivas and Lauren King then walked back-to-back to load the bases
- McGalliard came through with a single through the right side to tie the game at 1-1
- In the third, the Catamounts hit a two-run homer and solo homerun back-to-back for a 4-1 lead
- Western Carolina added two more in the 5th as Natalie Henry hit a two-run shot
- In the bottom of the 5th, McGalliard singled with one out followed by singles from Courtney Cygan and Daniels to load the bases
- Two batters later Vanhouse walked to score McGalliard and then McCall walked to plate Cygan, drawing the Eagles within two runs
- Boulware allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in five innings
EXTRA BASES
- McCall had two stolen bases on the day and now has 70 in her career and is also closing in on 100 career runs with (93)
- McCall also moved into a tied for 3rd on the Winthrop all-time stolen base list, now trailing the all-time leader by 17 (Charlene Smith, 71)
- King has now reached safely in six straight games while McCall has a streak of five straight
ON DECK
Winthrop will wrap-up play at the Winthrop Eagle Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 12:30 p.m. against Ball State.
