Rock Hill, S.C. — Winthrop softball captured its first win of the season and ended the opening day of the Winthrop Eagle Invitational with a split.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Youngstown State
- Eagles struck in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with no outs
- Three batters later with two outs, Courtney Cygan and Lauren Hutcherson both drew walks to plate runs for a 2-0 lead
- After the Penguins cut the lead in half in the top of the second, Winthrop pushed six runs across in the bottom half
- Peyton Rivas walked to lead off and then stole second to get into scoring position
- Macy McCall followed with a double to put runners at second and third
- Lauren King stepped in and delivered a single to right to score both runners and push the lead to 4-1
- For the second straight inning with the bases loaded, Cygan drew a walk for her second RBI and a 5-1 lead
- Vianna Rodriguez made it 8-1 with a two-run single to left with two outs
- A two-run homerun by Warren in the third gave the Eagles a nine run lead
- Sydney Boulware tossed the five innings allowing one run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts
vs. Albany
- The first two and a half innings were quiet until McCall stepped in with two outs and took a 2-0 pitch over the fence in right center for a 1-0 lead
- Morgan Petty put Albany up 2-1 in the fourth with a two-run homer to left center
- In the top of the seventh, Katie Falotico hit a two-run homerun to right center to push the lead to 4-1
- King led off the bottom of the seventh drawing a walk but was out at second on a force out
- Warren, who reached on the fielder's choice moved to second on a walk by Cygan
- Mackenzie Smith struck out, but the Eagles loaded the bases when pinch-hitter Ella McGalliard walked
- Kaitlyn Tucker worked the count full but struck out to end the threat
- Bella Roy tossed a complete game allowing the four runs on four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
- In the win over Youngstown State, the Eagles had four players with multiple RBI (King/Warren/Cygan/Rodriguez)
- Cygan drove in her first runs of her collegiate career and also extended her streak of reaching base to six games
- McCall had two stolen bases in the game as she now has 68 in her career and is also closing in on 100 career runs with (92)
- McCall also moved into a tied for 3rd on the Winthrop all-time stolen base list, now trailing the all-time leader by 18 (Charlene Smith, 71)
- Cygan's single in the 5th inning extended her streak of reaching base to four straight and she's also hit safely in three straight

Winthrop is back in action on day two of the Winthrop Eagle Invitational as it will face Robert Morris at 3 p.m. and Western Carolina at 5:30 p.m.
