GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Winthrop lacrosse program opened the 2022 regular season with a 17-7 loss at East Carolina Friday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Pirates scored the opening goal of the contest to take a 1-0 lead
• Ellie Dutton matched ECU with a score of her own
• Savanah Paton and Lauren Asher added goals of their own to give Winthrop a 3-1 lead with four minutes to play in the first period
• The Pirates scored the next seven goals of the game to take an 8-3 lead
• Katie Witmer scored to cut the lead to four, but ECU added another goal before the half
• The Pirates scored the first two goals of the second half for a seven-goal lead
• Asher and Grayson McKenzie slashed the lead to five with consecutive scores
• ECU netted five of the last six scores of the contest to provide the final margin

 NOTABLES

• Lauren Asher and Savanah Paton led the Eagles with two goals apiece while Alyssa Angelo recorded two assists
• Asher and Kelsey Johnson tied for the team lead with three ground balls while Kimora Bailey had three draw controls
• Johnson had 14 saves on the night
• ECU won 18 of 26 draw controls while Winthrop had 14 ground balls to the Pirates' 13
