ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Winthrop baseball program got their 2022 off to a great start with an 11-9 victory over the Eastern Michigan Friday evening at the Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles are 1-0 overall and improve to 27-16 all-time in season openers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Eastern Michigan got on the board first in the top of the second inning as they hit a 2 RBI single to take the early 2-0 lead
- Khyree Miller hit a three-run blast in the bottom of the same inning to give the Eagles a one-run lead
- Two runs from the visitors re-took the lead in the top of the fifth
- Dillon Morton doubled to left center field to score Ty Hooks and tie the score in the bottom half of the inning
- C.J. Conrad later singled to center field to score Morton
- Joseph Szvetitiz then came up to the plate and smacked a single of his own to score Jack Spyke
- Conrad scored on Miller's groundout to give the homestanding Eagles a 7-4 lead
- Winthrop added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Spyke and Conrad had RBIs
- EMU cut into the lead in the eighth inning with a two-RBI triple and an RBI single
- Szvetitz had a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to add two insurance runs as Spyke and Hunter Christopher scored
- The visiting Eagles scratched out two runs in the ninth, but Winthrop held on for the victory
